In the popular imagination of those who have never set foot in Ireland ( it is my case ) an Irish is a man / woman with a redhead.

How far this assumption is true ?

    It's not, not even slightly.

Have they just been in a fight or something in your imagination?

Finland, The Netherlands, Scotland and a few other countries all have more redheads per capita than Ireland.

Considering gingers are going extinct, god permitting, I wouldn't say very true at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

    Not true.
Trust me, I've tried, it's very very hard to find good red hair dye in this country.

Its a little know fact but anyone who is born or enters this island and is not a redhead, is detained and has their head forcibly dyed an obnoxious shade of ginger.

Leave the redheads alone - they're hot!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,916 ✭✭✭shopaholic01

There's a woeful shortage of redheads unfortunately. :(

I think they should be paid to reproduce with each other.

And no, I'm not a red head. I just think they're gorgeous.

Redheads are the real Irish. We should worship them.

Or better still - with me. Won't do their numbers any good, but i'd love it!

I've often seen it said that Scotland has the most, but Ireland has always been in second in any source I've seen.

Where have you seen Finland and the Netherlands ranked higher than Ireland?

the only hair on my body that is ginger is my facial hair but only if it gets long.

out of 13 aunts and uncles though there are 6 that are true gingers. Most of these have kids now so at a recent family wedding there was no sign of any extint gene!

The island of Inishboffin off Donegal is full of them too

I was told yesterday that my fledgling beard contains a single ginger hair. I'm now considering shaving all my hair off and having a vasectomy. I cannot allow even the slightest possibility of another ginger coming into the world.

Except that isn't true. It is a recessive gene thing so it can't happen. The story about them becoming extinct was a hoax that was reported widely as fact

    Jealousy.

It's also impossible, as Shensen pointed out, to get a realistic red hair dye. So, you've either got it, or you haven't.

Well it's not like I was being serious in my post anyway. Couldn't care less, for or against gingers tbh.

I've seen Rachel McAdams with red hair and l'd tap that in a second. It depends on the ginger, really.

There used to be loads of them when we were all pagans. Then st paddy arrived and apparently we all had to be christians. Since gingers don't have souls, they all had to emigrate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I was recently told that during the US/Mexican war, a lot of Irish were drafted in to fight the Mexicans. But they didn't like fighting another Catholic nation and so switched sides. Once the war ended, they settled and as a result you get lots of Mexicans with dark skin and bright red hair. I think they're called something like Los Patrice or something like that. Something to do with St Patrick.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

The whole of my dad's side, including my dad, have red hair. His family hail from Cavan. Three of my siblings have bred with fargners (turns my stomach thinking about it ) and two of them have spawned red heads. As long as my clann lives, red heads will never die! Never I tell you!

Hope to spawn a few meself, in fact.
