I'm looking at joining the Glenroyal in Maynooth. I'm really only interested in using the pool and learning to swim but you have to join the gym to use the pool. For this reason I will probably also go to some of the classes. I've heard some people mentioning the gym in Liffey Valley as it's cheaper - is €500 expensive for gym membership? I was paying €40 p/m before elsewhere. I suppose it's worth it if you get the use out of it. Maybe I've answered my own question!! :/

In cork its around the norm for a private gym with pool. by private I mean attached to hotel or similar but not open to general public.

I paid 200 to join ben dunne with swimming pool and all classes included. 9 months.

That's very good, I'd consider that super cheap. I know 500 probably isn't OVERLY expensive, I suppose I was just hoping it would be cheaper. They do offer €150 for 3 months so I think I might opt for that and see how it goes. See if I like the swimming! Realistically I'm only planning on using it up until June anyway as I usually go away for the summer.

If you use it regularly its a good price. If it was 200 and you never used it then that would be expensive

It's 10 euro a week, use it at least 2 times per week and u'll get value out of it

So your on about 500 a year for gym membership and asking if its expensive.

Then you go on to say you were paying 40 euro per month before. So 480 a year.

Don't see why now you might think that 500 is expensive, confused.

my gym is 150 for a year and has everything I want in it, I personally wouldn't pay 500.

I also am only interested in swimming pool. I pay less that 400 euro but that is 'off peak' membership so not for weekend or after 3pm. This suits me. Work out how many times you would use it and cost per visit, then decide if it is 'expensive'. A decent pool is hard to find and not part of standard gym.

If you have nothing helpful to add, why reply with a smart comment?

Such a huge discrepancy between membership prices. This is what I mean. Suppose I will get use out of it though between the pool & classes, it's just a lot of money and paying direct debit ends up costing more. Who has €500 to hand out immediately for gym membership?!

It never ceases to amaze me how internet users can find an opportunity in even the most absolute innocent of thread topics to make passive aggressive posts. I really didn't see it coming in this thread, I have to say. Anyway, OP, cost is expensive relative to the competition, not to how much you're going to use it. ANYTHING is expensive if you don't actually use it. The question is what are the competition charging. Google some local gyms and check out their prices.

its not really a smart comment, im just confused with your reasoning

and to answer your Q, 500 Euro for a decent gym is not overly expensive.

Okay question answered I think. It just amazes me that some memberships are €150 and then others are €500 or more. Not to worry.

Generally, the more expensive the membership, the more exclusive the gym. i.e. you're paying extra to have a quieter gym, which in itself has all sorts of benefits.

I'm a member of the Glenroyal. I pay the 150 every 3 months. You can't compare the price of gyms without knowing more about them. Yes somebody could be a member of a gym for E150, but does it have a pool? Jacuzzi?, Sauna?. For all you know it could be bench press and a treadmill.
I've also been a member of the The Clarion in Lucan, and the one in Clane. But I like the Glenroyal most. There are 2 pools there. One is an adult only pool, it's very nice, it also has a huge jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, all in the adult only section, so no kids running around ruining the buzz. I think I paid E750 for membership there a few years back, there was a E150 registration fee for the first year, so E150 for 3 months seems pretty reasonable now.

The price is what you pay and the value is what you get. I pay a high price for my gym but I see value in paying it. Some people don't, so they join other gyms.

Cost v value v what you are prepared to pay.

take cars for example - all cars will get you from A to B and all will be capable at driving at the speed limit so will get you there in roughly the same time.

The difference between a mercedes and a lada is brand, gadgets, luxury, extras etc.

There are other costs and benefits to be considered in making a choice.

I like freedom of open swim times with no hours blocked off due to school use etc. I like freedom to use place without queuing up to pay for a session such as in a public pool. There is decent parking close to pool and journey from home is good. My pool is located close to other useful places so can combine trip with other purposes. There is a decent sauna, plenty of lockers, decent showers/hairdryers.

I was with Total Fitness at Sandyford until it closed. It had far superior pool facilities. I do miss the huge pool there and a fab hydro therapy pool but on balance and for all other reasons am now happy enough in present place.

Thanks for the replies. Some very good points and ye are right - its what you make of it that determines its worth or value. Thanks everyone. Apologies for my silly question! (Hindsight is fantastic!)

For those who ARE members in the Glenroyal, is there a pool timetable available or is it mostly free sessions? The gym I had before had a pool timetable as they did a lot of lessons in the evenings so part of the pool was blocked off. Can't see anything on their website.

I work very close to UCD/Belfield and they rip you off to the tune of €1,000 a year...:D David Lloyd's Riverview Club also nearby charge nearly twice that!!!

Af far as I'm aware all classes are in the "everybody" pool. I've never seen any in the adult only pool.
