Anyone see this on BBC last night?
I flicked on by accident and luckily got to watch it, it seemed fairly decent and factual.
Talking about how when dietary guidelines were being established in the 70's the big sugar companies used their power to persuade everyone that sugar doesn't contribute to obesity and that fat in the diet was the cause of obesity hence the birth of low fat products.

They also talk about the switch from sugar to Fructose corn syrup. Pretty interesting watch. It's up there on the player but don't think us paddys are allowed watch it.
Episode 2 is on next week.

    Buy sugar fat and salt

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Salt-Sugar-Fat-Giants-Hooked/dp/0753541459

Im reading this atm and its actually scary what the food companies do/ have done. Like Phillip Morris who produce Marlboro used the techniques that learned to cigarettes to increase sales of a food company they brought(even the cigarette smoking executive wouldnt eat the food their company produced do to it being so unhealthy). Also fat companies add certain amounts of sugar, fat and salt in particular amount to make food appealing. Its an eye opening book and highly processed food is being compared to the new tobacco crisis as this food will kill a lot of people.

I've been meaning to buy that book alright, This series seem to be along the same lines.

They go back and forth between companies and advertising and personal responsibility. While I see the reasoning behind the companies adding all the sugars and all the complex psychology and marketing with unhealthy food there still has to be personal responsibility.

  • An in depth critical review of the "Diet" industry also starting to be shown by same producers.

I thought the "Fat" version was excellent. Hoping for the same again.

  • Second episode of "The Men Who Made us Thin" on iplayer now.

Really really very good work again.

At the heart of second episode is the un-reasonable belief that many of us have that we can just eat what we want and train it off. Analysis of gyms and the idea that they can be used effectively as weight loss tools on their own.

Food Industry's sponsorship of that belief speaks wonders!

You cannot out-train a bad diet.....but by god you can try :)
