Windows 7 and security wont update

The Microsoft Security Essentials definitions for Virus and Spyware and windows 7 fail to find and install new updates automatically and manually on my laptop. The error code C0000034 appears. I completed a system restore to an earlier date, however it has not worked.Any ideas and suggestions would be very much appreciated ! thank you 0
