Another Ankle Injury

Starting another thread as I don't want to Hijack another poster's.....

Went over on my ankle playing 5-a-side football 2 weeks ago. It made a noise like knuckles cracking, so I knew it wasn't good. I hobbled off the pitch and got some ice on it. Then I drove home - with difficulty (probably wasn't a good idea..). Woke up the next morning and couldn't put my foot to the floor.

I went to the Beacon medical centre and was treated nice and quickly. (Very pleasant experience, but of course you pay for it.)
X-ray didn't reveal any break, so the consultant advised that it was a sprain or stretched ligaments. Gave me a compression bandage, crutches, pain-killers and anti-inflammatories.
Told me to keep it elevated, ice it and use the crutches for a week to 10 days.

After 8 days, I had enough of the crutches as the pain in my hands was worse than the pain in my ankle from limping without the crutches.

Today it is 16 days since my accident and while I can easily get around without the crutches, I still have a lot of swelling and there is still pain. I finished all of the anti-inflammatories.

    My questions are:

Is this normal or should the swelling and pain be gone now?
Should go back to the hospital to be re-examined?
Did I come off the crutches too early?
Should I try to get a repeat prescription for the anti-inflammatories?

    Thanks all,

Not giving medical advice but had experience with a similar injury myself so I'm assuming it's within the rules to tell you how it was (knuckles cracking is a good description!). Stayed on crutches for 2 weeks, during the 3rd week I still used crutches but just to hold my weight not for 'crutching' around. I can't remember about inflammation to be honest but it would have been swollen and bruised for a couple of weeks anyway. Best thing you can do is just rest it, if it feels really bad or you think you need to get it re-examined then do that. If it's been looked at already then I would be inclined to just keep icing and keep the weight off it as much as possible. An injury like that won't be fine in a matter of weeks it will take months to be 'normal' again and even then you might still feel some weakness in the ankle in my experience. Keep it wrapped up to support it.

I rolled over the outside of my ankle btw.

    Thanks Jive.
That's reassuring. I'll give it another week or so to see how things are before thinking about going back to the hospital.

In my opion it might be worth booking in for a sports massage. This can aid lymphatic drainage and help accelerate the healing process and reduce swelling so you are able to commence weight bearing and proper rehab depending on the grade of strain/sprain
