Can anyone give me an idea of what are currently the most cutting-edge technologies these days in software development? I want to keep my skills up to date. I'm currently doing a MongoDB online course. I've heard the following are in demand:

    Big data / Hadoop
    MongoDB
    Scala

Is this accurate? Are there others?

Can you qualify or limit the question somewhat?

    What sort of time frame?

Are you asking what technologies will get you jobs in Ireland?

I'd be surprised to see mongoDB on a list of the top three emerging technologies.

I think there's a trend where data analysis is becoming more important to many businesses. Im not sure that means 'big data'. Nor is 'big data' the same as hadoop.

The most cutting-edge technologies these days in software development are research projects in universities and places like intel and google.

You should try to do things that interest you; but you could also study the want ads and see what's in demand.

    Maybe.

What about tech startups? Open source projects? Solo programmer side projects? Hedge funds? The NSA?

Cutting-edge tech comes from lots of places.

    cutting-edge ≠ in-demand. In fact, they're almost antonyms

Thought Works tech radar is out quarterly & always a good read. They look at techniques, platforms, tools & languages/frameworks. In each quadrant, they mark things as:
    • Adopt: We feel strongly that the industry should be adopting these items. We use them when appropriate on our projects
    • Trial: Worth pursuing. It is important to understand how to build up this capability. Enterprises should try this technology on a project that can handle the risk.
    • Assess: Worth exploring with the goal of understanding how it will affect your enterprise.
    • Hold: Proceed with caution.
