It hasn't and haven't seen any work being done on it yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭timc1

I heard from them, it will be October, work men in there since 7am this morning...fair play...

    which unit have they taken?

is it on the side near the crystal boat Chinese?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭timc1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭AsianDub

    Yep, next to Il Valentino.

Does anyone know what the story is with the Ocean Bar? It's been closed for a few months.

The Ocean Bar appears to have 'gone under'....in fairness it did start to smell, nothing updated in over 10 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭AsianDub

Yeah it always had a weird atmosphere in there and the food was sh*te.

I wonder if anyone has taken it over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 514 ✭✭✭liffeylite

I don't know if anyone has taken it over. but I am pretty sure it will be taken on soon.

The marker hotel opening in the area has been a great boost and the roof top terrace in particular has been a big pull to grand canal docks.

Also, William fry the law firm have just announced they are moving 400 staff to grand canal docks with facebook taking additional space there too. I think another letting is on the verge of being reached also so the trade in the area will get a huge shot in the arm.

really good news for GCD all round.

Still missing a "proper pub" in the area though. I know there is ferryman. Maybe get rid of H bar and turn it into an old man pub. Thats what is needed IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭AsianDub

I'd love to see the lads who run the The Black Sheep, Against The Grain etc. take on the place.

Manys a time i walked out of a pub if they put football on....its the most annoying thing in the world with all that noise going on and fat people in shirts roaring at the telly.

Couldn't agree more. It's actually probably the main reason that for a long time I had an aversion to 'old man pubs'. Without the loud TVs they're actually fairly nice places.

i'm not fat and dont wear a jersey but like football on TV in a pub!

But I celebrate if my team score ya. Natural reaction!

Will Donnybrook Fair do well in the area with it being practically next door to Fresh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭timc1

It will wipe the floor with not so 'Fresh'...far superior products and service.

True and fresh have just put an Insomnia in too which in my opinion is the worst coffee in the world!

Also I never buy meat in fresh it just doesn't look great always go to Doyles on Pearse st. Maybe a bit of competition is just what Fresh needs to get their act together!

An entrepreneur could buy one of the vacant warehouses near FaceBook and turn it into a proper pub at not huge cost.

Big demand in GCD for a regular pub.

I disagree, fresh is far better than DF, the most overrated food in the country!

    Apparently it's opening tomorrow.
FANCY FOOD STORE Donnybrook Fair is opening a fifth location in Dublin tomorrow, bringing new jobs to the city.
The new shop will be officially opened tomorrow morning at Gallery Quay on Grand Canal Square.

Fresh is muck. I've been waiting for something (anything) else to open up in competition for years now. Admittedly DF is expensive but no more expensive than Fresh and the quality of their food is far better.

I got sick and tired of walking into Fresh to buy something only to find out that they arbitrarily raised the price of it by 50% overnight. Hate the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭JTMan

Ditto. Dont like Fresh. Overpriced. Nowhere near the quality of M&S.

What the GCD area badly needs is a proper supermarket. Tesco or Dunnes or Aldi or Lidl. Preferably the latter.

I hope the planners, who are currently looking at the future of the area, consider the desperate need for a supermarket.

With the population density in that area, a second supermarket would be an obvious success.

What this newly developed area with lots of well-paid workers is also missing is a bank. Yes you can do most of your banking online, but unfortunately visiting a branch during working hours is sometimes necessary.

Second? I don't consider Fresh in the supermarket bracket.

KBC are opening a bank branch behind the Market Hotel in a few months time.

The AIB branch in the IFSC is not too far.

been honest i dont see how DF and Fresh are competitors in GCD. DF in very small with just a deli effectively. Fresh is a small mid sized supermarket. ya sure they might lose some customers midweek for lunches...but people will still use Fresh to pick up bits & pieces etc. Area crying out for a Dunnes/Tesco.

There's a tesco express in Ringsend.

There's a tesco express in Ringsend.

Still that's in ringsend...still talking the bones of 20-30 minute walk return.

Well if you're not prepared to walk 10 minutes up the road to the competition then you're not really in any position to complain.

There's a Eurospar on Barrow St also.

I didnt complain- just stated that GCD needs a tesco/dunnes of its own! I'm prepared to walk 10 not 20mins which is how long it would take me to get ringsend and back especially with groceries. Spar....are u serious now?? do my shopping in a corner shop??

There's a tesco express in Ringsend.

Not a supermarket. It is a convenience store owned by a supermarket company. It has a much lesser range and higher prices.

    true.....now @MagicMarker.....everyone is looking a proper tesco/dunnes in GCD...now

The Tesco Express is pretty limited, Fresh certainly have a better selection.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I wouldn't call that Fresh a supermarket either, and I certainly don't believe that Tesco Express is more expensive. The tesco wouldn't have as much selection but it'd have most of what anyone would need.

Like I said though, if people are going to complain about the lack of options while ignoring the options around them, then I feel little sympathy.

You've clearly never been to that Spar.

    Nor would I.
and I certainly don't believe that Tesco Express is more expensive.

It is. Even Tesco admit as such.
The tesco wouldn't have as much selection but it'd have most of what anyone would need.

Nah. It does not have an adequate range for a 'supermarket shop'.

Never mentioned supermarkets. But seeing as you ask, are you aware that you are right next to town? The majority of people don't have a supermarket on their doorstep.
    Fungus wrote: »

    Indeed.

You've clearly never been to that Spar.

Clearly u haven't! It has a small selection of goods which are way over priced....only good section is the alcohol section in there. Would u do a weekly shop in there u would magicmarker? U keep saying the 'option' around...what options....20-30 min walk to ringsend and back to a overpriced tesco express...hardly foooking brilliant s it....

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,214 ✭✭✭chopper6

Do not the larger Tesco stores offer a home delivery option?

Maybe do your weekly shop slightly further afield and have it delivered to you?

ya for a fee. I have tried it and it is handy at times you do have a tendancy to overspend on rubbish!. but you cant beat going into the supermarket yourself. anyhow....lets not go off point here guys....we just want a proper supermarket in the area thats all. we dont care about ringsend or anywhere else that has one or online shopping......

Some posho I passed by on the day this place opened called it 'Donnybrook Far'. Is that the correct D4 way to pronounce it now?

It would be so expensive to try and set up a new pub in GCD. Definitely it would require a Louis Fitz or Charlie Chawke Midas touch and significant financial backing. An Against the Grain would definitely do well with the Google hippies keen to distinguish themselves from each other.
