    Hi All,
    Just looking for an opinion, is 649.8 hours on a volvo penta shaft drive
    2004 model considered high ??

    lastly if one had to choose which engine model is better for service and parts in Ireland. What would you go for ??

    a volvo penta or Yanmar both 150 diesel inboards on a shaft drive

    Hi dpaulod, I wouldn't worry too much about the engine hours if it has a good service history and was well looked after. I would be more worried if I got a 2004 with less than 100 hours as it may not have been serviced and more likely neglected.
    As for Volvo v Yanmar it all depends on who you ask a bit like Mercury v Johnson :D I would go for what ever dealer is nearest to you that can supply you with parts and servicing "Not cheep" for both engines but the yanmar parts are a bit more available world wide than the volvo.

    I wouldn't consider 650 Hours high.
    My engines have about 750 on them and as they are properly maintained they are fine.
    There is an argument that most of these engines are based on a commercial unit (truck engine usually) which would do many multiples of those hours without difficulty. It makes sense to me, even bearing in mind the different duty cycles required for a marine motor, I.e. continuous high revs.
    Most issues with marine engines are due to lack of use, corrosion, or skipped maintenance.
