If they were axed, we would have been told

One of the guys attempted suicide a few years ago after saying he wasn't happy with the way they'd gone, ie crappy celeb guests.

Would be great to see them on TV again though.

Do you have a link for that story? Would love to read through an interview with him if that is true.

PODGE AND RODGE CREATOR LEAVES ‘WE SOLD OUT’ SUICIDE NOTE
Posted by Philip Collins on November 7, 2007

The Irish entertainment world is in shock this morning after the news that Mick O’Hara, one of the duo that created Podge and Rodge, had attempted suicide in his South Dublin mansion.
Mr O’Hara, who performed the character of Rodge, was found unconscious yesterday morning by a family friend after a botched suicide attempt involving prescription painkillers and a bottle of whiskey. The un-named friend also found the suicide note, which was headed ‘We Sold Out’.
O’Hara was believed to be quite uncomfortable with Podge and Rodge’s new found success, and it was well known around RTE how unpopular the comedy duo were with powers that be at the national broadcaster.
The note is believed to point to the duo’s quick rise to fame as the main reason for O’Hara’s suffering, at one point in the note he writes nostalgically: “I missed the days when we just had a ten minute show on late night on RTE, I felt free then, we just wrote funny stories and had some fun…
“But it all started to go wrong when we got our primetime slot and we turned into a chat show, we’d bring on stupid D-list Irish celebrities and ridicule them. It just wasn’t funny anymore, it was too easy,” he goes on.
“I think my lowest point came when we presented the Irish Meteor Music Awards, it was on before the watershed so we weren’t allowed to curse. I remember I looked at Ciarán and we both knew we were ****ed, it got so bad that night, when we had to introduce the Kaiser Chiefs the best joke we could think of was to call them the Kaiser Chefs. It was pathetic and I knew then it was all over.”
Close friend and comedy partner Ciarán Morrison (Podge) was believed to be “upset” on hearing the news. He told the media: “That stupid gob sheen – what was he thinking? **** him, if he doesn’t want to do it anymore, I’ll continue on alone. I was the one with all the talent anyway.”

Aren't Zig & Zag back though? They're the other faces of the two boys. I'm not sure about that article. Sounds dodgy but if it is true then I wish both of them all the best.

FWIW he was right. The P&R show was low rent, trashy TV and not that funny.

I thought it was great, in a kind of crappy way. Great TV, though obviously trashy.

I remember reading that in an Independent article online but can't find anything now.

Lucy Kennedy got pregnant and the baby looked like Podge? Or was it Rodge.... drove a wedge between the pair.

    do you honestly believe that?
kind of a bizarre piece, can only assume it was an attempt at comedy?

Reads like a weak attempt at satire. A really weak attempt.

I would agree with that, I might even start watching the lls again. Tubs with his uncontrollable winking eye is unbearable.

Over exposure, the joke wore out and it was an embarassment to watch.

    no

Ah seriously, there are only so many **** and dick jokes. As for the guests, I remember seeing Freddie Starr and it was woeful.
They suited the Scare at Bedtime format much better.

A Scare at Bedtime was fantastic. Really was a shame to see them stuck interviewing the Katy French's of the time.

I remember watching Scare at Bedtime when I was younger, must have been around 9/10yo....
I would stay up, then hoping my parents were still down stairs, sneak across the landing to their room and watch it on the old 14" crt with the sound turned down low just in case.
    Fun times :D

I didnt want to reply, but i'll put some fears to rest. I know Mick O'Hara personally through a mutual friend, although i havent seen him in a number of years. I'm glad that article was bull**** as he's one of the nicest chaps you'd ever hope to meet, and he doesnt drink. They know exactly what P&R is and what they're doing.

I havent kept up to date with what they're at now as i dont watch RTE but i'm glad that suicide story was a hoax.

To be fair, anyone who read that and thought it was real is a bit thick.
