Spray for bryars and gorse/whyns

Is there a selective spray for these.
Was asked to help clear a ditch along a lane, has bryars and a few whyns. A selective spray to kill these off but not the whole bank would be handy.

Any recommendations??

Grazon 90 I reckon, it'll certainly kill furze.

Trebel is cheaper than Grazon 90 also you can get it in 5L which is cheaper again works out at 30euro/litre, However a litre will do you so what ever is the first you come accross.

I put out 200 litres of grazon 90 on creeping gorse that has got out of hand.

Still some growth and it was my last chance before I put quad sprayer to bed for the Winter.

Will be interesting to see if I get much of a kill

Did you use 200l of grazon itself or do you mean diluted? Would roundup kill furze aswell, did a good bit of hazel with it mixed at 20:1 and it's well scalded.

I put 500ml of Grazon 90 into 95 litre sprayer on quad and have 40meter hose on it so just bang away !

2nd tank I hadn't enough grazon but I had a litre of Scrub killed that recommended 20ml in 10 litres for spot spraying gorse .. So I used 260 ml of that and think it was 220ml plus washing of bottle of grazon 90 together with the scrub killer .

Yeah I've done furze in grassland and they totally wiped out .. If you looked closely you might see the odd bit of rotten timber /stalk up to 1 inch in diameter lying about .. Cattle seem to graze over it and break up the dead scrub .

This area is seriously taken over though .. Maybe 15 years of no grazing ..furze is even too green to burn but hoping to get a good kill !

3.0 acres in it .. Will get remainder in spring hopefully .. Time consuming putting out that volume with a lance

I recently spotted a boom sprayer made for a backpack sprayer. I had often thought of rigging up a boom sprayer off the quad for rough ground, but didn't really get into it because I knew I'd need a backpack to carry it.

Now if I were to be able to connect the quad sprayer tank to the backpack boom by the long hose I'd be in clover.

Full and total chemical protection would be an absolute must.

It's worth it. Money well spend. More grass for your livestock, more money
in your pocket, hopefully.
Anyways I like to see the fields green.

ive a 10ft boom on quad for flat ground.. but you can get the boomless ones that have kinda a splash plate mist out the back .. wouldn't be accurate enough for spraying off with round up but be grand for rushes etc ,, drift could be an issue unless dead calm

How are you getting in through the gorse - I mean getting the height and distance? I imagine that with 3 acres it's both high and dense. It must be difficult to gauge what's done also

I had a horse in it for 2 months and its made kind of paths in around it.. so I kinda use that as a mental marker and I park up on top of it( its not more than 1-2ft .. its like driving up on a big Mattress of vegetation- creeping gorse) and fully extend 40m hose and cover sections


im not perfect but hope I haven't missed sections.. will probably hit more of it in spring and give any green bit a second whack

Boominator, I have one, not used it.

"Done that" is a good marker dye for sprays, I find it invaluable on furze, thistle, and bracken.

I think it is about 40/L buying as a single litre. I taught I bought it in a Kerry co-op store

Grazon 90 on bryars is a great job... But expensive if covering much whyns..
For whyns we sprayed with Gallup via hand lance in the spring and it was a savage kill indeed, much cheaper..

June to August it says on the label of grazon spray. They seem to be blooming this year

Gorse is a nitrogen fixer, cut it back and shape it otherwise you're robbing yourself of free nitrogen

whay do you mean nitrogen fixer, if its along the hedge of a 2-4acre field ....is it making a difference?

Would also like to know the answer ? Have gorse about 1ft high creeping up in the middle of fields. Any restrictions when you can spray them ?

Of course it is, cattle will always go for the grass near hedges as it it of much higher quality. The roots of the grasses feed from the nutrients drawn from the roots of the hedge plants. It's a huge network under your feet that compliment each other.

While gorse can be beneficial in some ways, I'd still like to keep it under a certain amount of control so it doesn't take over and choke up the grass directly beneath it.

I done allot of spraying over the weekend, using Grazon Pro. on gorse. Some of it had got out of control and part were very high..so i couldnt reach those parts - still no better weather.. hope it works as going around with 20Ltr's on your back is no joke.

Any restrictions on when you can do gorse ? Have patches of it popping up on rough land and creeping out on to the field about 1ft or so high ?

all im aware of is if there is birds nests in it you might need to leave that one, and if you just going to pull them with tractor/chain or digger think it need to be done in Nov - March..not aware of any spraying restrictions.

reporting back, so i done my spraying [week before last i think]..done a great job. but it seems i managed to miss some spots ...will will go back over those. Grazon Pro is what i used and i had it slightly stronger then recommended ..

I found grazon takes a while to work - the furze doesn't die back straight away, it takes a while...
I also think grazon has something about using it only once per year per site - you might want to check that though, I don't know why...
