You would think as the head of the church and seen as the direct messenger of god on Earth him making this blunt statement should toss out the age old "persecute the queers" mentality in the likes of America for example.

I actually think it's nice that he's at least speaking against discrimination. Some of the stuff the last pope said really encouraged discrimination and hatred towards gay people. It's still not right, but it is an improvement.
