The 757

Ok here's a thread to discuss the 757. Why? Because its one of the most over powered commercial aircraft and still amazing many people with its performance.

Anyone any stories or experience up front to share?

    757 > Everything else....

I think it perfectly demonstrates the cyclical nature of the industry; very much in demand for the thinner long haul routes and you'd have to think that potentially Boeing/Airbus have missed a trick per se by not creating a direct replacement/competitor (I know the 737-900 and A321 are pencilled in to fill that gap).

Nice aircraft to fly in too anytime I've been in them. Beats the socks off the horrific 3-4-3 set up AA have in the 777 anyway.

Never had a single good experience on one, but not down to the aircraft itself, mostly operational/airline reasons.

But, just look at this thing...

    757200-01.jpg

Looks so sh*t-hot vs 767,330, etc. Just something about the front of it, I always thought it was one of the best looking aircraft out there.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the 757's outstanding climbing performance.

I know folks are going to disagree, but after seeing that RNAF 757 at Riat in 2009 and 2012 I have more respect for that aircraft seeing how it can be thrown about the sky where as Jets are designed for it.

The yellow B757 from DHL also falls into the same category - :D

Flew a BA one from Aberdeen to Heathrow few years back....... was too intoxicated to fully appreciate it.....

Maybe I'll get a chance on an Aer Lingus one in the future.... wonder would they ever consider operating it on a Shannon to Belfast rotation like they once did with the World MD-11 few years back...... would be a nice run to test out the performance with the light weight

I really love the RNZAF 757 the way it gets thrown around at air shows like its a fighter!

Have great memories of going on holidays as a kid on Monarch's 757s. Also anyone remember Air 2000? They used to have nice 757s and i'm sure they did holiday charters all over Europe.

Thanks - you just reminded me I flew twice with Air 2000 on a B75 from Belfast to Toulouse back about 2001-2002.

Long time ago now, did a flight Brussels to Heathrow on the jump seat of a 757, it's not exactly a long sector, it was a rare clear day with no haze, we crossed Dover at FL310, and from the left hand window, Portland Bill was visible, and on the right hand side, we could see the Wash.

If it had been available, higher would not have been a problem. The other aspect of the 757 performance is that with 4 wheel main gear bogies, it can stop in less runway than equivalent twin wheel aircraft.

The longest flight on a 757 was Birmingham to Orlando, with a tech stop for fuel and immigration in Bangor. The flight was OK, no complaints about the aircraft as such, but the seat pitch was a bit tight for comfort, we had more space on a Shorts 360 from Dublin to Birmingham than there was on the 757, but that was no great surprise on a charter flight.

Also flew Newark to Dublin on Continental a few years ago, and that was a very good flight.

The downside of the 757 is that it's bulk loaded, so finding a bag to offload a missing passenger is a pain, and cargo in hold 4 can be problematic to load, as the door is a long way off the ground, and not overly large, so by the time a belt loader in in place, it's steep, and there's not a lot of space left to get things in the door.

A 757 300 is a nightmare to load and unload, due to the extra length, but the 757 had retained popularity due to it's overall performance, and the recent addition of winglets have made a useful difference to the range and economy.

It will be interesting to see how they are received on the Aer Lingus routes, and what will replace them longer term.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I love 757s. Could listen to them taking off all day, the noise from the engine is something else. If I ever win the lottery I will buy one. :)

EI should use this livery when they get their 757s :)
The singer of Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson is also a commercial pilot, and actually flew this plane to some of the countries they were touring in.

One of the 757 is coming in a retro colour scheme I think..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭merisi

There was a rumour that all of them would be in retro liveries, whether the same livery or not is another question... Maybe this one will be in play too.

I went to LHR in 1988 on a BA 1-11 , with my now, ex-wife. When we were coming home the 1-11 was replaced by a 757 . Just after we took off from LHR i mentioned to the steward that i was doing my PPL and asked about visiting the flight deck. The crew were happy to oblige and within 10 mins off take off i was up in the flight deck . At that time digital instruments were very new and i had never seen them in the flesh, so for the the 20 odd mins the crew explained the whole system to me, really nice guys . When we were half way across the irish sea, i suggested i return to my seat, but the captain told me not to bother, and instead, strap myself into the jump seat.
we landed on the old 24, and it was amazing .needless to say i had no camera with me . After we parked we must have chatted for another 20 mins, so by the time i exited the flight deck there was no one left on board , bar the cabin crew, and the Dragon .
The flight was superb, but i can tell you i paid for it for a long time afterwards

Correct, plenty of 757 action in the full doc here, but you'll have to wade through loads of other stuff.

I suggest the first twelve minutes would suffice. Good interior and flight deck shots as well as a look at the cargo hold inspection on the modified aircraft.

    My first flight in a B757 was around 1995, Air 2000 G-0000
Dublin to Palma, I still remember the growl of the big fans on the takeoff run and the initial rate of climb that made your eyes water, we sat at the very front facing the bulkhead, loads of legroom but on the return flight we were in the ordinary 30 inch pitch seats further back

Gosh, how bland everything has become nowadays compared with what was on that clip. Whatever happened to Aer Turas?

A neighbour of mine is a BA A320 pilot and, when asked where doesn't he like flying to, he said a trip to Funchal on a windy day is always going to be a long one.

Most have probably seen this before, but amazing that a "heavy aircraft" can still climb comfortably on just one engine. Great testament to the 757.

    Have loved them since.

Used to do a lot of work with these guys.

They had a dog based out of Dublin for a long time.

G-OOOC which was re registered to SkyService as C-FTDV IIRC.

I used to love the 75's though. We used to call them the Ferrari of the skies and they always served us very well. Hated when we dropped back to a 320 during the winter months :(

Remember having 7 Air 2000 75's on the deck at the same time and all lined up beside each other ! Stunning sight !

I flew on the 757 with United from Dublin to Washington a few months back and it was a bit of an experience! It's a nice plane when it is not full but I do think that for a transatlantic flight that twin aisle planes such as the A330 are that bit better for comfort. However the old-school worthiness of the 757 was just brilliant. Although it struck me as a little long in the tooth it was solid as old boots.
