    Last year's thread

    Route

Same as last year. Very well organised race with wave starts.

    Probably the same this

Wave 1 – Runners who wish to run sub 85 minutes (we had to be told to move forward to the line) I have never seen a race start so polite. I am used to Ballycotton madness.
Wave 2 – Runners who wish to run between 85 and 105 mins
Wave 3 – Runners who wish to run 105 minutes plus

Last few miles are hilly but not too taxing if you know the place well. Found the crowd support poor for a race of this size, turned a corner into mile 3 and there was 70 people there and silence. No one made any noise (all waiting for the person they knew to cheer them on) but couldn't fault the race. organised to a T. More portoloos needed but not a problem for us guys :)

I'm planning on running this, would it be worthwhile to run the actual route beforehand? Concerned about the hills but not really done much running up in the park...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭ger34

Was going to ask the same question myself.

I would. If it's not too much of an inconvenience to you to get to the park sure why not? I always prefer to know my route on foot as no garmin profile or elevation map can give me a real feel for a course. I didn't know the route for the Fingal 10k and feel I could have paced it better had I known.
The hills in the park can be a bit daunting when you're confronted with them but once you're on them they're not that bad really and don't go on for too long. Good luck!

I see from the Dublin Marathon Facebook page that the route has slightly changed...not sure what it was before.

thanks for that. Might have missed it as not on fb. Don't think the changes would have too much bearing on finishing times. Breaking up the nice fast stretch down Chesterfield from miles 5 to 6 is a pity but not too bad really. As long as they don't add in anther hill I'm happy!

Last year we came straight back down chesterfield ave, the change is a jog right to that triangle thing then back out onto chesterfield. Seems a bit odd that they'd do that as opposed to just the straight run???

Did the first route go past the OS offices? If so, looks like they adjusted to keep that road and access to the Knockmaroon gate open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,619 ✭✭✭overpronator

Last year the route went all the way up the O.S road at mile 9 road before turning onto Chesterfield avenue and then the furze road to finish, this year we're just heading straight up Furze road after the upper glen road. The baggage drops were set up all along the finish straight last year so there were serious issues with people crossing onto the course with finishers coming through, this route change will solve that thankfully.

Signed up for this a good while ago and was quite excited for it, first time to do it and would form part of my training for the half in September. That was until good friends confirmed the date of their wedding as being the 23rd August. For a moment I wasn't sure why the date sounded familiar until the OH said "don't you have a run that weekend??" Going to enjoy the wedding, but take it fairly easy and just head out the next day with no pressure about times etc and try just enjoy it. At least it's in Dublin!

Did the Clontarf half recently and the Fingal 10k. Training had gone well for the half and I enjoyed the 10k too. Feel like the wheels have come off slightly in the last week or two training wise, still going out but seem to be struggling a bit. As a result I'm a bit nervous about this race between that and the wedding the previous day. Just have to get the head down and I'm going to try also to incorporate more hills and inclines to prepare me for the two races in Phoenix Park. Will be heading out there more, especially on the LSR, good to get used to some parts of the course.

I hope everyone else is getting on ok!

Looking forward to this as well. I went out for a trial spin over the course on Sunday, could get a bit congested around the zoo, other than that, the run back towards Castleknock is mainly a slow steady incline, the hardest part of the first half. Few tricky hills at the end of course :) Best of luck with it.

Will be my first experience of the Frank Duffy..... despite not actually running it :D

Working at it but hope to get a glimpse of the finish at some stages. If not I am sure I will see a few of you in the massage tent before or after.

Best of luck to everyone doing it.

The final 2 miles are tricky enough between bends and hills. I get annoyed when I see runners using the footpath during a road race.
Running down Chesterfield Ave will make life easier. Furze road is longer than you think, I always end up sprinting for the finish line far too soon. Hopefully the wind stays down for the morning. Good luck.

Going to give this a blast, my 10m PB is 3 years old, and needs to be revisited with extreme prejudice...

Also my Frank Duffy tops from previous years are all to big for me now :):):)

Haven't done a tap since the Fingal 10k due to a bad back and starting to doubt whether I'll make this one :s

Will have to have a good week and stay off the beer but should be doable.

Have to say what great value these races are. €35 for the 10 mile and the half marathon. I've just received the numbers for both in the post. This is great as normally you have to give up time the day before to go collecting numbers etc.

    well done to all involved.

But there's no bag of Tayto in a "swagbag " and no obligatory trip to somewhere in dublin 4, I'm so disappointed ! ok , ill try to move on from the rock and roll debacle but I just got an email from rock and roll looking for feedback! , I directed them to boards .ie , all the feedback there that they'll ever want !

totally agree, great value your money and you get two t shirts. Got my numbers in the post today. Looking forward to it now. Might go over to phoenix park on Saturday and run the route.

Just about up to 10 miles now.

Just signed up for this and got a confirmation email. Then realised that the closing date on the website says last Friday 9th August. Hopefully my entry has gone through and I'll receive my number in the post sometime next week. Can anyone confirm? Thanks in advance.

Did you send them a mail? Probably the best way to confirm. Or else, I did find a thing on the website where you can do a name search and it shows who has signed up for which races of the series. Let me know if you can't find the page I'm talking about, I'm sure I could if I needed to. Might be a way for you to check

This probably comes up ever year, but wondering for the guys doing DCM and are scheduled to do a LSR on the Sunday 25th (day after the Frank Duffy) what are you planning to do?

5-6m after Frank and rest on Sunday, or just the 10M on race day, and easy 5-6 on the Sunday ?

    Opinions ?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,196 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I'm not an expert by any means but I wouldn't go on a long run the day after a race. I would replace the LSR with the 10 mile race as I'd be expecting to empty the tank at the race on Saturday.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

No harm to do a long run the day after a race IMO. Depending on how you're feeling, long run on tired legs is good practice for a marathon. Just don't do it for every long run...

I'm a great fan of an LSR the day after a race, great benefits (a lot of them mental) from running on tired legs.

Under no circumstances should you attempt the LSR if you've picked up a niggle during the race or if you feel too exhausted the next day, be honest with yourself and if you feel up to it head out with a long run planned but with a way of cutting it short if you feel it's wise. Good luck

others who've posted would know much more than me but on race day, I'm doing 2 miles warm up, then doing Frank :P and then 2-3 miles cooldown or more if I feel up to it to make up for the lsr and a recovery 4-5 miles the day after. I've done this for the last few races and it's worked fine but different for everyone. good luck whatever you decide :)

Another good way to do it if you have the discipline to do it that way. Not me, I never do the post race miles when I try it like this. :)

    RK,

Pretty much going to go for broke on the Saturday (looking for a new PB), so probably will have nothing in the legs for another 5-6 miles.

Anyway, so much for trying to get out of an LSR on the Sunday. I think the concession will be miles on grass instead of the road...

works for me if I'm doing the race on my own and haven't arranged to meet anyone afterwards which is the case this time. Otherwise people you're with just think you're weird:rolleyes:

My plan calls for 16 with 10 @ MP so I was going to do that with the 6 beforehand. I kinda want to run the race flat out though so I'm unsure what the better training stimulus overall would be.

Kind of in the same place myself !

Probably cause i run it every year ?

Its going to mess up my running weekend.

I would race it statts, you can make up your mileage with a recovery run later or the next day. Would be great training for that half in Athlone. I'm kind of regretting not entering this myself.

FIrst time I've done any race series races in a couple of years. I think the lower numbers in the 5 mile inspired mile.

Horrifically unfit here, but hey, I ran Mallow back when I was fit so at least the result from here will be a good benchmark for where I am.

The hills near the end are grand at the start of a run [or on a LSR], or if you pace your race correctly, but near the end of *any* race you do see a lot of folks going backwards up the Military road and even on the gradual hill on the Upper Glen Road..

But remember, if you don't cross the line fit to collapse, you have not worked hard enough :D

cheers fellas. am actually looking for a profile/altitude of the route as opposed to a routemap if anyone has it. and yes I fully intend to be pretty much dying as I cross that line...

Hey, I was out at the weekend and did some of the route. Not the exact same but I tried to incorporate the hills at military hill etc at around the same stage so I'd have the profile of that bit if that's the part you're most interested in. i'm sure someone else has the whole thing but let me know if you've no luck and want mine. I can get it to you later

I'm running this too (I hope! :o). Run 8 miles last Saturday and finished it in good form. I was planning on taking the family with me for support but parking sounds like it'll tougher than the run itself! Any ideas on how to get there with small children from Dun Laoghaire? We'll never get ready on time for the 46A and then walk all the way to the start line! PM me if you prefer... :D

I don't think they're fussy, unless you're trying to get one of the last buses and there's no room for runners. If they can't get on the bus, your supporters could walk up to the zoo and they'll see you run by twice, and go from there to the finish line.

Yes, I think that's probably the best thing to do. Thanks again and see you all on Saturday!

Thanks Ray, anyone can take the bus but things can get very busy from 9 to 9.30(when the last bus leaves).
