I have a lot of respect for young people that don't drink or smoke. I think it is very admirable.

I'm 18 and although I drink, a number of my friends maybe three or four don't drink or drink very very little. They are girls but maybe that doesn't matter however none of the lads I know don't drink.

Assuming young means early 20s or late teens, I don't find it odd when a young person tells me they don't smoke. I find it odd when a young person tells me they don't drink because it's not that common (at least in my circle of friends). But if they don't wanna drink that's their business and my respect goes to them. Personally I'm a slave to booze and cigarettes and it's ruining me. It's nice to see someone that doesn't need to drink to have fun. I've seen non-drinkers get hounded with "you don't drink? Why the **** not man, it's greeat. Freak!1!11".

Nobody says anything in disbelief when I say I don't smoke but drink, yeah they immediately think I'm from some other planet or something when I say I don't drink.

I don't really drink I mean no more than 2/3 times a year max! You'll get some people trying to shove drink down your throat and go on about how you are dry blah blah and others don't mind but would question your reasons for not drinking etc. Saying that I haven't found many young people who don't drink/smoke.

THE GOVERNMENT IS considering a plan which will significantly reduce the number of smokers within the next 12 years. The plan, based on a document called ‘Tobacco-Free Ireland’ aims to reduce the proportion of the population who smoke to just 5 per cent.

Had my first drink at 20 and have never smoked in my life!

Question is if you go to pub with friends and they drink - you not. Or you just don't go anywhere?
I haven't drink till my late 20, even when my friends got totally hammered - I had so much fun with them being drunk that I simply haven't had to drink. But then I moved place, lost my gang and start to drink on my own to entertain myself on my own....

    Never ever smoked thou.

I don't drink or smoke and I've had negative reactions to it from total strangers. It's as though people assume I'll be sitting in judgement over their drinking behaviour all night and get pre-emptively defensive. The reality is that they are judging me.

Most people I know well don't care whether anyone drinks or not. I know very few smokers and I've never witnessed any surprise over someone not smoking.

It's uncommon, but not unusual as such. I'm 19 (well, I will be in half an hour) and don't drink/smoke. I could name other people who don't either but we'd be a minority.
I should also mention that I do get a lot of people trying to make me drink. They usually stop whenever they realise I still go out and act like a drunk person, despite being sober :P

Seen my granny die as a child slowly to lung cancer from smoking - so that really put me off smoking. Genetic condition means my liver aint the best of creatures so I have to be kind to it. Its pretty annoying as a non drinking teen means being excluded.

By the way, I am err... very young so it isn't all that impressive. :D

Cant quote on my phone, @supdude, not drinking means I very rarely be invited out with friends and the odd time I do its not fun to be sober and watch other really drunk people.

I know a good few lads who don't drink or smoke. I myself started drinking when I was about 19 but I only drink at pubs/clubs/events. Not really into the whole drinking at home thing or in other people's houses.

Not at all, think of it, you will never have to suffer from a hangover, or if you smoked... coughing all the time and lack of bodily function affecting the lungs and wheezing/ tiredness/ grumpyness/withdraws/ sweating constantly...

Think of it, you have it nice and handy :) Better off staying that way me thinks.

Not drinking doesn't mean you have to be serious and responsible (well at least to a certain extent). Myself and any non-drinking teen have never felt excluded because we can still join in the fun.

I know that feeling, I dont drink myself anymore, and yes its very irritating at times to see people under the influence, talking ****e all night.

Smoking is a terrible habit, wish I never started when I was a nipper. E-cigs are a blessing :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 215 ✭✭Pensivepuca

Sup_dude - Yeah, I have been greatly amused at my friends drunk too, but the problem is over drinking, a few too many and basically being the 'one who watches out for us all'. Plus I am socially akward and find it hard to relax in situations like that. No doubt half the reason I do not get invited out.

It's a strange question: do you drink. I find it hard to answer. It's like asking me: do you drink Lilt. I haven't in months but it doesn't mean I'm allergic to the stuff either!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 423 ✭✭The Narrator

When I was younger I honestly would have thought that strange but as I have grown older and met more people I honestly couldn't care less if they do or not. People are people at the end of the day.

Drinking etc is in our culture, people expect others to mirror themselves, which is why some find this sort of thing strange.

And if non-drinkers and smokers want to marry, I'm alright with that too...

    Why?

I can see why some people dont drink. A few of my mates were saying during the decent weather that they dislike early drinking and getting a slight buzz because sobering up is so horrible. Personally I find a few drinks puts me in an excellent mood which carries into when I sober up.

I'm 21 and don't drink or smoke. I think smoking has become very unpopular among young people nowadays (compared to before) so no-one expects you to smoke, but drinking is a whole other game. People definitely find it weird if you don't drink; I've had reactions ranging from bewildered to downright hostile.

I think people expect non-drinkers to be either really boring or complete hardliners who want everyone else to stop drinking. When out with a new group of people, I sometimes feel like I have to prove that (a) I'm not a complete weirdo, (b) I go out and enjoy myself in pubs/clubs/late bars as much as most people and (c) I'm not judging them for drinking. I don't drink because I, personally, don't like it and I genuinely couldn't care less about what anyone else has in their glass.

I have met quite a few other young non-drinkers though (can think of 7 people off the top of my head), it's not as rare as you would think...

I have a decent car and people always ask 'how the **** can you afford that yoke' I suppose it's because I don't drink or smoke :D

I'd imagine some people spend mad money on pubs and that. A mate is in college and she must be out 3 times a week drinking, I just don't understand what people get out of it?

Drinking doesn't make you more charismatic. It just makes you care less that you aren't.

I can't think of anything more depressing than being in a bar/club sober with lots of drunk people around you.
