General Web Discussion Thread

I think this forum needs a place for designers to discuss the web in general. Maybe there isn't any need for this, but sometimes I think some topics shouldn't merit a thread of their own. It might even be a good place to vent :)

    I'll start us off :

Do you think Chrome has declined in overall browsing quality for the past 18 months or so? The introduction of Blink especially has, for me at least, made it very hard to get anything done, with the page hangs & general speed. I know this is v1 of Blink, but still its not to the standard that I expect of the browser. Should Google slow down on releasing updates?

Anyone planning on heading to Build this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

As in the Microsoft one or the one in Belfast? :)

I've wanted to go, and I'm pretty ashamed I haven't been to a single conference yet. Not exactly the immediate social type though tbh. Maybe, who knows. It might help it my quest to break free from freelancing.

 FOR SHAMEEEE! *hiss* *boo* etc.

You should definitely make time to attend at least one per year :). As for being not all that social; it's very, very, hard to attend a conference and not make at least one friend/acquaintance. Unless you really go out of your way to sabotage yourself.

Plus when you're drinking and bowling with Jeremy Keith, it's very hard to not get all giddy.

I may have been known for that :P

Yeah I might do, bit of a trek to belfast without a car though.

I'm no designer but I still think people should have to pass a test or get a license before they're permitted to operate Photoshop without qualified supervision.

Serious Chrome & Firefox flaw: chrome://settings/passwords Just click on the stars and press 'show'. In Firefox it's Preferences > saved passwords > show passwords. This works on any platform from desktop to mobile.

Especially when using something like Keychain and have Chrome make that absolutely useless via an import.

Jesus christ SEO people, you old!

I know they said that the SEO industry is dying, but I didn't know that was because the people working in it were :pac:

SEO optimization is losing its irrelevance pretty quickly imo. It's mostly due to common sense and improved search algorithms.

Anyone else using Bourbon Neat? I wan't to like it, but its very confusing.

Absolutely. Though I wouldn't say losing it's irrelevance per say. Rather that it's completely transforming into something completely different.

Would love to go (said I would definitely go this year!) but the tickets always come out at the worst time for me. Saving for a holiday now and have Christmas in mind also, can't fork out almost £400 for it, despite how good it'd be.

Gulp is so handy. So easy to get started too, compared to grunt at least. If you do try it, use browser-sync. It is crazy powerful.

I'm also liking Craft CMS, rebuilding my site with it at the moment. Fairly expensive to get some extensibility but I think it might be worth it (for me at least).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭Beekay

Only getting into Web design. What does gulp do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

It's hard to put into words what a task-runner can do, because it can do a lot.

But for example, if you use SASS it can compile it to CSS, add all the browser prefixes to selectors (-moz, -webkit), minify it, all whenever you save the sass file.

It can compress images to a small size, concatenate Javascript files so that you have as few HTTP requests as possible, check thew Javascript for syntax errors, reload the browser whenever it detects a file change etc...

Browser-sync is actually indispensable for me now, and I've only used it for a few hours. For multi-device testing it can sync actions across devices, whether that is scrolling, clicking a link which will load that URL for all browsers that is running the site, refreshing the html or injecting newly created css.

Its actually pretty crazy. Also, hugely overwhelming at first I'm not going to lie (Grunt was way worse though). If you want a nice intro, have a read of this.

Browser sync? Do you mean live reload with gulp or the stand alone browaer sync app?

If the latter, link plz :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

No it's with Gulp. Powerful. Works with grunt though https://github.com/shakyShane/browser-sync

Not sure if this is best for this thread but here's a mini rant:

Last night I was told I am a spoofer and that my almost 20 years of involvement in many and various web sites/ops is worthless and means I should not get employment in the industry, as I do not have any pieces of paper, just a mere shedload of experience. This was from a person who did a degree (404 not found) in Web Accessibility, no less, and which has a Fetac level that goes up to, wait for it, 11! and who has not even produced a single website outside of the classroom. Oh and as a bonus titbit, there's no situation where an alt attribute should have an empty, blank or null value (whatever you want to call it).

I have truly been found out, told off and put in my place.:rolleyes::pac:

I liked that rant for the Spinal Tap reference alone.

"who has not even produced a single website outside of the classroom" - it's this bit where everything comes together. Just simply regurgitating everything they've recently heard in a lecture or read in a book. So based on what you do compared to what the books say, you're wrong.

My guess is though that this kind of thing is the same for every industry. It's like the rant in the bar in "Good Will Hunting" where he says next year you'll be telling me that you now believe this because blah blah blah.

In keeping with the thread, I've recently started using the "Redux Framework" with WordPress. Was recommended to me by a friend. I have to say, it's pretty damn good based on what I've learned in the little time I've had to look at it.
    http://reduxframework.com/
Here's a link to the plugin page on WP. Bit easier to learn about from this page, I think anyway: http://wordpress.org/plugins/redux-framework/

Anyone else using Sketch? I think I've become too reliant on Photoshop & definitely have more than a few bad habits as a result of it. Sketch is fantastic so far, only used it this weekend.

Bit iffy with the type alignment tools, but besides that I think it may be where I make mockups from now on.

Have you had a read? It's very meh imo. Looks pretty, but it's very basic. The only value I could see in it is if you had a new staff member, and TBH what's outlined in the book is so standard I'd be surprised they got hired without knowing it in the first place.

Might be handy for students/interns/juniors I guess.

Screams a bit of usTwo having too much time and money, which I guess is appropriate, considering those are also the traits of pixel perfection :pac:

It is, but again, its free! Handy for a quick read through, can never drill the fundamentals in enough.
