Ryanair uses photo of Cork to promote Dublin to French

Ryanair has used a picture of Cork in an ad in a French newspaper to promote a route to Dublin.
    http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/ryanair-uses-photo-of-beautiful-cork-to-lure-the-french-to-dublin-238000.html

Ryanair have put their hands up:
“We know it’s a picture of Cork, but there’s nowhere as beautiful in Dublin as Cork, so we used it to try and get more French passengers to fly to Dublin,” Ryanair deputy CEO Michael Cawley said.

I'm not sure who should be more infuriated - the french people with this blatant false advertising or Cork people who's beautiful cities image is being whored out to bring people to Dublin.

Surely this is akin to using an image of an Aston Martin in a Skoda ad?

Its Ryanair, they used a picture of Cork because it was cheap.

    Ryanair get free advertising
People of Cork think their city is great
Dublin people don't give a shít

    Everyone wins.

To paraphrase a comment on joe.ie; Ryanair sell you a ticket to Dublin, fly you into Cork and tell you it's "just outside" Dublin, then charge you €30 for the bus.
So a picture of Cork on ad for Dublin is a rare moment of honesty for Ryanair.

That might make sense if Ryanair didn't fly to Dublin.

    Ryanair fly to Dublin airport.

    That's merely a ruse.

You mean the 'Bertie Ahern International Airport of the Banana Republic of Ireland'?

Every time I see the word Cork, I shudder, get on my knees and thank the Gods for being born in Dublin. I don't know much about the place only I have encountered some people from there over the years and their accent is just atrocious. And they have a massive inferiority complex. No one in Dublin gives a sh*t about you Cork, we just get on with our lives. Take some elocution lessons however, should you wish to ever venture abroad.

Pictures of Cork should boost tourism in the other 31 counties

Never mind the fact that the picture was taken in Cork, I thought this was the most disturbing part of the article.

Yeah. Most of these Ryanair stories are designed to get Ryanair publicity, everything from standing tickets on flights to charging fat people more money for tickets. He's admitted that loads of times too.

If you still get outraged at stories like these, well then you're wasting your time.

It does highlight the fact that there is no single iconic landmark unique to Dublin that people can instantly associate with the place.

Ryanair wouldn't have to pimp out Cork if Dublin had a globally recognised trade mark structure like Tower Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower etc.

Having said that the majority of French people have never heard of Cork, let alone know how to find the place on a map.

    The photo is pure divilment.

These cities are more the exception rather than the rule though really.

Was saying pretty much the same thing the other day to somebody. I think most people could easily name at least five iconic spots to visit in Paris, London or Rome even without having visited any of those places.

Personally, I couldn't do the same for most other major European cities like Madrid or Berlin.

Brandenburg Gate, Sydney Opera House, Seattle Space Needle, John Hancock Building, Brussels Atomium, Christ the Redeemer, CN Tower. There's loads.

Back around 1998 Dublin Corporation held an open competition to design a new landmark structure for O'Connell Street. Of all the entries they chose the Spire!

I've been to most of them and I'll give you the Brandenburg Gate, Sydney Opera House and Christ The Redeemer as they're genuinely iconic and unique.

I disagree on the others. They're not in the same league in terms of global recognition.

Edit: I'm not arguing that there isn't a good load, just that there's more big cities (particularly of Dublin's size) that don't have worldwide famous landmarks than do.

The irony of being a dub and criticising the cork accent for being atrocious is clearly lost on you.

Visiting the Spire or having your photo taken by it is about as exciting as taking a shit.

All of these came to mind when thinking of a structure immediately recognisable as belonging to a city. If you visit that city it's obvious. You can't move in Chicago, a true world city, without seeing some touristy tat with the John Hancock building on it.

The original point was that Dublin does not have an associated structure. They had the chance to acquire one but chose the Spire. Missed opportunity.
    Ha'penny bridge? One example.
Dublin has a history of missed opportunities. The original proposal for housing the Hugh Lane collection was within a bridge, see here.

It would have been unique, instead it was rejected and Hugh Lane decided to give his collection to London (luckily after his death, the collection stayed in Dublin).
