Since a lot of people evade it anyway, is there even a point?

Should the swear filter be removed? 131 votes

It's because some people faint, have panic attacks and soil themselves when they see a word like cùnt.

Boards.ie can't afford to fight against these "I need new pants" cases.

Yeah if you're on an expletive filled rant you might think better of it by the time you've [REDACTED]. No one wants that

If money was no object and you could pay boards to add a word to the swear filter, what word would you add
    prick ?

Here's an idea: Have the filter be per user, defaulting to on. That way it's censored if you want it to be, and not if you don't. This would mean people wouldn't have to circumvent it anymore, so if you leave it on it would actually work rather than just show you swear words with accents in them. Best of both worlds.

Sounds like a hugely arbitrary means of defining what constitutes a valid point.

Also, let people add phrases themselves to the swear filter, to weed out stuff they don't like, like "Thinly veiled" or "No, you're wrong".

No, I think it's fine as it is. The Gentlemen and Ladies among us who can swear like a wounded Dutch pirate when appropriate and necessary for artistic reasons quite enjoy bamboozling the filter. And remember the battle-cry:

    What do we want?

    A cure for Tourette's!

    When do we want it??

    CUNT!!

Certain forums go one better and use the wordfilter to search-and-replace words. I would pay a considerable amount of money, for example, to have "Enda Kenny" replaced with "Dildo".

I'm guessing you've never watched The Thick of It. Political satire where every point is improved immeasurably by copious amounts of swearing.

I give you Tucker's Law of politics:
"If some cunt can fuck something up, that cunt will pick the worst possible time to fucking fuck it up cause that cunt's a cunt."

And then they'll tell you swearing isn't funny. Of course it is, same as farts.

It's been shown that swearing relieves stress. It's a much better stress reliever to say **** as opposed to sugar. Therefore the swear filter increases the stress suffered by boards posters and should be removed.

And let's face it, here on AH we all like to relieve a little stress now and then.

I like the imaginative ways people find to swear using different numbers etc; it's really very clever, so I say leave it where it is.
