Hello all. I've bought an old fibreglass boat, 'lake boat' design. There are many, many coats of paint on the exterior, of various types. What is the best way to remove this. I've been told to be careful which type of remover to use. When stripped, is there an advantage in applying a coat of resin? Thanks.

Hi noddyone2 you can use paint stripper just don't let it sit on the fiberglass too long and wash the boat down when your done, as you have a few coats to get through you might be better off with a heat gun and scraper keep the gun moving and just heat enough to soften the paint so it lifts off your other option is to just sand it down or if you want to spend a few quid and save yourself all the hard work get it vapour blasted.
I don't think you will need to coat it in resin unless the gelcoat is gone and your down to the fiberglass strands just patch up any holes and dings with plastic padding before you paint the primer.
