    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anybody knows the symptoms of being gluten intoleran/celiac? I suffer from hypo-thyroidism and i know this can have a link with celiac disease as they are both auto-immune diseases.
I think myself that I am gluten intolerant but I want to know some of the symptoms of this. As far as I understand the tests for this can be inconclusive and unclear.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :D

I have had a hyperactive thyroid in the past, I know from experience that it played havoc with my body, in particular my digestion and ability to process certain foods, leading to gastritis and some other stuff.

Go see your doctor, or preferably someone who is specialized in gastrointestinal stuff, I went to see a specialist in mallow general hospital so there are definitely a few GI specialists around!

One go to your doctor/ get a referal to a specialist.

If you suspect you have an auto-immune disease then you'd want to remove anything from your diet which can trigger auto-immune effects. The quick list is:
dairy, potatoes, all grains, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, meats containing nitrates, foods containing yeast, eggs and peanuts. While you'll probably complain that this will restrict your food choices drastically, it will but you can choose health or foods.

    hi eimear,
Yes there is a link between auto-immune diseases.
A simple blood test can indicate if you are coeliac and then a gastroscopy with biopsy taken will confirm it.

See symptoms and more info here:
    http://www.coeliac.ie/coeliac_disease/symptoms

Symptoms start to occur when coeliac disease is triggered. Find out more about what causes the onset of coeliac disease.
Coeliacs can experience one or more of these problems:
    diarrhoea
    constipation
    weight loss
    chronic tiredness
    anaemia
    failure to thrive in children
    chronic mouth ulcers
    stomach pain and bloating
    indigestion
    bone pain
    moodiness or depression
    infertility
    recurrent miscarriages

Also flatulence, nausea, vomiting and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can indicate a need to be tested.
Symptoms vary from person to person and may be constant or only occur from time to time. Some people will experience an itchy rash which can be caused by an associated condition called Dermatitis Herpetiformis.
