What's your limit on engine size?
Do you actually need a diesel? What sort of driving are you doing and how much driving?

1.9 TDi Golf would be your best bet loads out there for 2-3k

ok maybe i'm not doing enough mileage - about 200km per week - but my 1.4l opel astra is eating petrol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 560 ✭✭✭wesf

no 200kms per week isn't anwhere near enough to need a diesel. you just need something easier on petrol, something like a hatchback corolla would suit you better i'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭RedDeadMarshal

diesel for town driving and everywhere else. If you think about it look at how much diesel cars are in stop n go traffic sure if it was so bad for them nobody would buy them, but they do yeah I agree with 1.9 tdi golf get that bulletproof

People do buy them, and then get landed with high maintenance bills when parts start to go from not being used enough/properly.

If you are doing low mileage then you dont buy a diesel; its not going to save anything in the long run.

if you never owned one, never comment. What is there to go wrong? The design is stone age Pump Duse system instead of modern common rail 8 valves and a small turbo. 2.0 tdi is more problematic but I doubt it since I never owned one I've owned so many 1.9 tdis that I can't even count the only thing that went wrong was the clutch because I was driving it quite hard that's it if you are afraid of the tdi then buy an sdi its a 2.0 tdi without the turbo modern day diesels probably fail with their common rail and all that electronic stuff that makes it quiet and all. But not the 1.9 tdi

    Hi Bridest,

I have a Mazda 6 1.8 and the best you'll see is 35mpg combined, in city stop/start knock another 10mpg off that. Great car but if it's economical driving you're after, probably not the best choice of that bunch.

OP, How much petrol are you currently putting in for the 200km? It could well be something wrong with your current car. Should cost you maybe €30ish per week for that mileage at around 30mpg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭corkgsxr

id get the civic. decent ones are very good cars. even the driven to **** ones seem to keep going

Yeah there is something wrong with it, has an oil leak , it's getting a service next week, I'm getting rid of it anyway. Costing about €50.per week on juice !

Op i'd go for the corolla, they are reliable, good resale value, and fairly economical.
As Muppetcheck said, you should be spending about €30 per week for that mileage.

He doesn't know what he's talking about, anyone who calls a mkiv onward golf tdi bulletproof hasn't a clue!
Bulletproof could apply to the earlier 1z/ahu engines, none of that flywheel nonsense!

everybody on this forum seems to act like they know their sh*t but really they don't if you think you are all that tough then go on from your own experience list the problems with the 1.9 tdi and don't take everything from the internet.

Doesn't sound right. I'd be inclined to go for something petrol at your mileage, a Corolla would be a good shout. Don't bother with a diesel - you'll pay more and pay higher motor tax. The car will probably have higher miles too so more things will be worn out.

Wait and see the outcome of the service - mention it's consuming petrol at a higher than usual rate. Could be something fixable:)
yeah it's my family that owns them I'm not obviously gonna list everyone like poppa joe owns this uncle willis owns and so on...

Having just told someone they shouldn't comment if they have never owned one makes your advice laughable.

yeah well I do my research and from personal experience from other people I think I know my stuff for example I posted a thread between the differences of two different 1.4 versions of an engine and most people replied they are the same. Shows the knowledge of some people. Not saying you in particular but some people are clear idiots.

Are the 1.6 corollas just as good as the 1.4 ?

The only 1.6s sold in Ireland were the estate or the automatic hatchback.
Uk got manual 1.6 hatchback, mpg difference is negligible, around 2-3mpg in favour of the 1.4.
I'd stick with the 1.4 tbh

Wow, since you registered on this forum yesterday, you have gone from being in school looking for your first car to drive hard, to insisting that VW produced two different engines despite being told the opposite by people here including well respected mechanics with a wealth of experience and knowledge. You then tell us you have owned an infinite number of 1.9TDis over the years and now own the only Toyota 2.2 D-4D in the world that does have a turbo fitted. So which is it, I'm probably giving you a lot of credit here and assume you are attempting to troll? Or is your Xbox broken?

Sorry OP for derailing your thread but I just could not let this one pass, we get a live one around here every so often.

    Edit "Takes a deep breath".

yeh i'd stick to the 1.4, cheaper tax if nothing else. €50 per week for 200kms is definitely not right!! although that red whatever his name is will probably be on to tell us his various 1.9tdi's do about 100mpg

    Knowledge comes from listening.

You won't expand your knowledge by writing 61 posts per day on an area you obviously have an interest in when it doesnt look to be backed up by any real experience or perspective.
