memory foam and allergies

Hi all, looking for some advice. I have a bad back and on the hunt for a new mattress. I've read a number of articles saying memory foam is the way to go but my only previous experience with memory foam is a ridiculously expensive pillow that I turned out to be violently allergic to (even worse than feathers!). I had to throw it out and I've avoided memory foam ever since.

Anyone else out there who would normally need hypoallergenic bedding any experience with memory foam causing allergic reactions? Also any advice on brand of mattress or place to shop would be very welcome. Thanks

Hey MrHennessy, thanks for the advice. I've been doing the rounds of the bed shops but it's so hard to tell just lying on it in the shop and I've met so many salespeople who swear their memory foam is hypoallergenic..... Maybe it is, in fairness. I'm just afraid of spending all that money and finding by night two I have a expensive mattress I can't breathe on! I'll have a look at the latex options and check those out.
