Slow slow slow Macbook

I have an '08 Macbook, one of the white ones, and it's gone really really slow lately.

The multicoloured circle appears a lot when trying to do stuff on it.

Is there anything that can be done to speed it up again?

See if the hard drive is near full, if so, backup and then delete some files

It could be a rogue or misbehaving background process. Open Activity Monitor and see if there's an app using an excessive amount of CPU.

Alternatively, your hard disk may dying. Open Disk Utility and verify the hard disk. Check the SMART status at the bottom as well. Make sure you have a backup in case the drive is failing.
