Its something i've thought about before, yet my cousins call my granny mam. Obviously they copied their mother as my mother would have called her mam as well. I know someone who is nicknamed mam, but is actually seriously called mam even by friends and others. Wierd I know..

I suppose mam or mum, but never mammy :)

    Forget about labelling 'em.

Can we all just agree that the Ma's, Mum's & Mammy's of Eireann have been criminally overcooking roast-beef since the foundation of the State.

It's not meant to be grey in colour gals.

What about "mummy", sis in law insisted her wee ones called her mummy.

My youngest calls me ma ma, very French flavour to it, rest call me mammy, I call my mother nana now!!!

Ma - What scangers call their mother

Mother - What posh cnuts call their mother if addressing directly or normal people when talking about her.

I call her 'mum' when I'm talking to her but if I'm talking about her to someone else I think it's usually 'my mam......'

I don't know dude, I'm a northside Dub I grew up about as far from the bog as ya can get, and I and everybody I know calls their mothers Mam when speaking informally.

I've always associated the usage of "mum" with our UK neighbours.

Your mothers name is not called ma, leave that for the sheep, if anyone has a bit of respect, call her by her real name.

It just sounds like another inter-cobbelybog

Oops, i was kind of referring to Cork people. Cork northsiders say mam too. But it's definitely used by hardcore culchies as well. Are your parents culchies or something? :D

    Mam.

Didn't know anyone growing up who used anything different - I'm neither a culchie nor a northsider.

Today I heard a child calling their "mommy", I knew even before I saw the passat and the horse box that they were travellers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭elfy4eva

I'm genuinely surprised with how many people call their mother by her first name.

Seems like such an unusual almost distancing thing to do, at least for me.

Mum. That's what we always called her. It would feel very weird to me addressing her by her first name.
