Its something i've thought about before, yet my cousins call my granny mam. Obviously they copied their mother as my mother would have called her mam as well. I know someone who is nicknamed mam, but is actually seriously called mam even by friends and others. Wierd I know..

I've always associated the usage of "mum" with our UK neighbours.

Oops, i was kind of referring to Cork people. Cork northsiders say mam too. But it's definitely used by hardcore culchies as well. Are your parents culchies or something?
