Holy Crap! :( Genuine sadness here, Not the Nine O'Clock News and the early Smith & Jones were great comedy. Colins Sandwich is a forgotten gem.

Is there not an action movie actor called Mel Smith?

I know there is Mel Gibson, but I'm sure I can hear this blockbuster voiceover in my head saying "starring... Mel Smith ... "

Sorry for asking this in the other Mel Smith's RIP thread, I have no idea who the guy in the OP is but RIP all the same.

Was only watching a re-run of Not The Nine O'Clock News last night. Great series. Loved the Swedish Chemist shop sketch. "I want a deodorant....." :D

    Rest in peace.

My father used to watch Alas Smith And Jones every week so I would watch it too. I was slightly too young to watch Not The 9 O'Clock News at the time although I've seen it more recently on GOLD.

The likes of Alas Smith And Jones were full of original material. It was far funnier than later sketch shows like The Fast Show or Little Britain which consisted of the same characters churning out the same unfunny catchphrases week after week. There aren't enough decent sketch shows around nowadays.

Also one of my favourite Christmas videos and definitely someone who will be greatly missed.

For those younger folk who won't remember him as a comedian, himself and his comedy partner Griff Rhys-Jones founded TalkBack productions who produced a lot of hit shows.

    From BBC News:
Smith and Rhys Jones together created Talkback Productions, which made a number of much-loved comedies - among them Da Ali G Show, I'm Alan Partridge and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

I was a huge fan of Not the Nine O'Clock News and thought Alas Smith and Jones was great.

We've lost a real comedic talent and a genuine nice guy here. RIP Mel. :(:(

But what about a fun reel ?

If your being a grammar nazi, this aint the place. I hate your type.

If that's a good natured jibe, fair enough, Im drunk and spelling aint great.

What do feel about the emotional content of my comment?

Are you a fan of Mel's work?

I grew up watching Not the Nine O Clock News & Alas Smith & Jones.

    Great shows.

Even though I didn't see him on the telly for a while, I was genuinely shocked to hear of his death at a relatively young age.

Loved The Tall Guy when it came out at the time- Mel directed that film.
