there's a slider bar for the price asking you to choose the amount your privacy is worth to you, but it will go through for anything all the way down to €5.

    263249.jpg

only caveat that I can see really is that the special edition doesn't include a UK based server, but other than that it's a sweet deal, particularly given that it will work on up to 5 devices inc. (rooted) Android and iOS phones and tablets.

I paid €40 for their premium VPN back in Jan or Feb and it's been working perfectly for me so far, so for a fiver, it really is hard to complain. :)

me personally, or people in general?

personally, it's handy for your mobile as all the data is encrypted so you can use pretty much any wifi hotspot 100% safely without any fear that anyone can intercept your data.

also handy for viewing web pages with geographical restrictions on them as you appear to be coming from the location of the VPN server you are connected to, not where you actually are.

not to mention preventing your ISP (or other parties) from spying on your online activity, which is very useful if you were worried about the NSA or GCHQ reading your emails etc. ;)

if you wanted to "try before you buy" cyberghost do a basic free service or (not 100% if they still do it, but they used to) a free 30 day trial of their premium service, so you'd definitely find out if you needed it by that time.

loads of info on their website. http://cyberghostvpn.com/en/surf-anonym.html

the totally free service disconnects after 2 hours and is only a windows client (no android or iOS) but it'll give you a good idea of what's on offer.

Is it useful for legal torrents and using say US netflix/bbc iplayer etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭peaceboi

No uk servers included, Dont think it can be used to watch the
bbc iplayer or itv. Does anyone know about the availability of any good UK ones?
I used the expatshield, & it does'nt work anymore after an update:-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭Bigtoe107

Just bought this there, got a confirmation email. Thanks OP!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,739 ✭✭✭nava

Has anyone tried to bring it all the way down to 0 ? when you select it you can download it straight away, in work now so cannot install it to test it.

My guess is that probably will ask you to add a licence or purchase when installing like that.

the premium version of cyberghost vpn does have uk and irish (and loads more) servers as well and all those services work fine with it (that's the one i'm using), but it's €50 at the moment, although they have offers on that as well.

just give the free one a lash and see how you like it.

Has any one tryed this SOFTETHER from University of Tsukuba.
    .softether-download.com/en.aspx
    Its free for ever.

With SOFTETHER you need a VPN service to get it to work. It appears to be just software.

As a matter of interest, purely hypothetically, does it work for torrenting? And if it did, hypothetically, would it affect speeds?

Also does it say how long they retain your data?Or if they do?

Also now with UPC's restriction of nolonger being able to access thepiratebay, would this overcome this?

    Regarding privacy :
Positives: No logs, good free VPN service, 30 day free trial, great VPN client

Negatives: Legal situation regarding data retention in Romania is uncertain

Although in theory subject to the EU wide Data Retention Directive which was struck down by the Romanian courts as unconstitutional in 2011 but then reinstated in 2012, this Romanian company is adamant that it keeps no logs of any kind, disposing even of billing details once payment has been processed.

CyberGhost goes into some detail, explaining that it was put under great deal of pressure by the German government to hand over its records, and even had its VPN servers and databases confiscated. However, as no logs were kept, no user was ever compromised.

We love this attitude and are generally impressed by the service provided by CyberGhost. Were it not for the uncertainty regarding their legal position we would place it in a close second place to Private Internet Access.

piratebays mirror sites also blocked with upc?i no eircom has blocked thepiratebay but the mirror sites work which are exactly the same just different address.

And thanks op just bought this and works a charm :)

Doesn't work at 0. You just get a trial.

I use hotspot shield which the free version only lets you have an American address but its worked for me.

There is a paid version also but the free version is supported with adds. The only difference is the paid version lets you use a U.K. address.

Anyone else not getting a confirmation email after signing up? Chose PayPal and can't pay without it. Not in my spam either

Edit : just noticed it says orders are being processed manually so it may take a few hours. Someday I'll learn to read the whole page :-)

    Update:

Still no confirmation email from CyberGhost. Has anyone else ordered with PayPal and gotten the confirmation email? How long did it take?

I use a spam filtering email address so I'm wondering if that's the problem or is it just slow.

OK. Cheers. They might have looked at the email address I used and assumed it was spam. Did you give your proper home address? I didn't because I selected PayPal. Might be another reason.

No I gave my spam email address but it still worked , did you not get redirected to a confirmation page with a license key and a download link?

Nope. It said something about payment delayed as it was being manually processed and an order reference number. I was on the phone (after a long day) so maybe I missed something.

Did you give your proper name and postal address?

I dropped them an email. If they don't reply by this afternoon I'll try a new order.

No I don't think so but as far as I know they get that from PayPal

no, only US, German, Romanian, Swiss & Czech for the €5 special edition, but the premium one (currently €50, but quite often on sale) has loads more options (inc. Norway) as you can see below.

If if they don't keep logs it does not mean the hosting company they are lease their hardware and/or hosting is not logging EVERYTHING.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

Great deal thanks OP. I'm going to sign up. Never used a VPN before but after the PRISM scandal and the data retention laws, I think I'd rather be anonymous online. I've nothing to hide, but a good point is made on their website: You don't have to provide ID to buy milk in the shops (and have the cashier note down what you bought, when, where etc.) so why should the internet be any different?

Signed up now doesn't work for me, are you using their client and have you have you activated your subscription, maybe you're just on the free trial.

I'm not using the client. I've configured my laptop with L2TP. I'm activated. Seems you can use all the servers this way :)

EDIT: Might have spoke too soon. My laptop crashed suddenly and now I can't connect to those servers. I was only watching Top Gear on the bbc iplayer 20 mins ago! (was getting a good 25-30mbps connection to the UK server too)

    :(

I guess cyberghost got wind of it. Not sure I'll keep this as the speeds from the other servers are dire.

I've been using OverPlay for a few years now. As well as a great VPN service, they offer a Smart DNS service that's handy for geo-blocked content, if you don't need a VPN. I pay US$5 (€3.90) a month for their SmartDNS.

Great for Netflix, BBC iPlayer and AerTV etc. A godsend for the GAA while out of the country.

Also use it with Samsung Smart TV (on which I've been able to set the App shop region to the UK, or Ireland).
