this old boy is so old he doesnt realise that we have TV and are still only listening to the radio, and more importantly THERE IS A GPS COUNTER IN THE TOP OF THE SCREEN WHICH TELLS US EXACTLY HOW LONG IS LEFT TO GO!!!

can someone who uses twitter tweet him and tell him his is basically making us watch a kettle boil by saying how long is to go every minute or two

Talk about being pedantic. You really need to relax if you're complaining about a commentator telling you how long there is to go...

I enjoy his ramblings, takes me away from the megre everyday problems I have and laugh even more when he gets his info wrong which is fairly regular.

I like Kirby, his little sayings and random stories make it enjoyable. *prepares for hate* I actually find Kelly really boring to listen to..

You'd get better commentary from Alan Partridge

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,297 ✭✭✭✭Jawgap

To borrow from Douglas Adams, he's mostly harmless and it must be difficult trying to commentate for 4/5 hours at a stretch and constantly find something original to say.

    It's that fecker Kelly I can't stand..........:pac:

I like they way he reminds us why they call Rodriguez "Purito" (every half hour or so). I'm always forgetting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,138 ✭✭✭buffalo

I don't find him half as bad as I used to. But I'm only catching highlights a lot of time, and possibly miss out on the "filling time" part of the commentary.

You mean it's not cos he's a committed anti-doping advocate?

I find Kelly more boring but the two of them as a whole wont be winning any broadcasting awards in the near or distant future!

Although when Perdaut ( or however ya spell his name) from AG2R hit the ground in the TT yesterday, I was half asleep and the roar frightened the SH1T out of me

you must really hate watching team sports on the tv so with them pointing put the score all the time. have you a thing for ger canning as well?

This may come as a huge shock to you, but there is this crazy thing called a mute button on your remote. I know it's hard to believe but the mute button will ensure no sound comes from your tv.

Did any hear the difficulty poor Sean had with Pronouncing Teejay Van Garderan today. Very funny! Kirby feels like he needs to be constantly talking. What happened to David Harmon anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,507 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

I much prefer Carlton to Phil and Paul*

*I only get to hear Phil and Paul during the 30 minute highlights show on TG4 each night. Maybe it's just the way the show is edited, but their commentary is awful.

if only my tv could mute carlton and not kelly :( carlton is grand[ish] its just the infernal pointing out of how long is to go as much as he can that does my nut in. it makes zero sense either. we can all see how long is to go carlton right in the top corner where you are reading it from just like us, and it takes all of 2 seconds to say it, so youre not exactly filling time by doing it!
plus most of the time its said at the end after he has said something and realises how crap it is and to change topic says how long is to go

its like a nervous tick or compulsion or something, but annoying as **** he better grow out of it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

A lot of the time he's saying how far it is to the summit of the climb, or how far to the base if a mountain etc, which aren't on the top of the screen, and I quite like knowing that there's x k left to climb.

And if ye thought Kelly was bad at TJ, try hearing Brian Smith talking about him when he's on (or even just him saying 'Mount Baldy' at the Tour of California!)

I find it funny when Kirby loses the run of him self when there is a bunch sprint at the finish

    bring back quigley :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

Put some black tape on the screen over the graphic.
Now you'll be delighted when Karlton informs you how long is left in a stage.:pac::pac:

I like Carlton, feels like you're having a natter while waiting for the interesting stuff to happen. There'd be a lot of dead air in 5+ hours of broadcasting otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

Ah, the ubiquitous Carlton Kirby. I don't k ow why Quigly didn't get the job, he was decent for the Giro.

Carlton is okay but he is now repeating some of his anecdotes.

Id say he had the contract before they hired quigley or at least before quigley started getting his feet in under the table at the giro.

lets buy carlton out? or maybe just order a hit on him instead to make sure it will never happen again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,860 ✭✭✭TinyExplosions

is Quigley the Irish fella that did the giro? If so I certainly don't want him taking over, he was awful ;(

What we really want to to bring back Harmon -he's awesome.

(I do like Carlton though, he bring out the best in Kelly and doesn't take it too seriously). And as is often said during the tour, most of the commentary isn't for hardcore fans, it's for the casual viewer who doesn't know the ins and outs, which is why it all seems a bit simplistic to us!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭NeedMoreGears

He certainly communicates a love and enthusiasm for the sport. He rambles on a bit and sometimes loses track which is somewhat endearing. I like the way he comes close to getting a heart attack whenever there's a sprint. He even gets a giggle out of our Séan from time to time and if Séan has something important to say, he let's him say it rather than cutting across him. I like him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭on_the_nickel

I'm sorry, but he's an annoying idiot who can't pick out a rider without a close-up of his number.

Anyone who disagrees with me on this issue is wrong. Mods, please close the thread.

He did start a Friday discussion today, fair play to him, he said you're nuts if you don't wear a helmet.

I don't find him too bad, seems to be a good match for kelly who never gets too excited! ......he was onto kelly the other day bout his book who was jokingly on bout how much money he was gonna make!

Kelly has that dry wit... He made a comment on a wet decent (possibly during TT) bout how his postman would be descending faster than one particular rider!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

I have to say I agree with the view of him as an annoying idiot, a pure fool, incredibly irritating . . . but I suppose at least enthusiastic, not that that in any way saves the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭dogsears

I like his enthusiasm, and the way he goes bonkers at the end of a sprint finish.

But he seems unable to accept that such a thing as a couple of seconds silence isn't going to kill us all. Have a rest man! Your jaw won't seize up if you stop talking!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭WinnyThePoo

I like him aloooot. Makes a few mistakes with riders or how many kilometres left on climbs. Goes on a bit. I've gotten used to him by now and when he goes mental at the end of sprints its hilarious.

I like him. He's a bit like the average Pat Shortt village idiot character.
Harmless and entertaining. Sure he has no insights, but who cares. That's why Sean is there. He's there to bring out that, and he does get Sean to talk.
    That's good enough for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

I really liked the sort of catalytic or synergistic effect that Declan Quigley seemed to have on Sean Kelly during the Giro. Maybe it was just a two-Irish-lads-at-the-bar phenomenon. Seemed to really bring Kelly out of himself, he did a lot more talking and it sounded like the pair of them were having the craic.

Current eurosport TdeF guy (is that who we're talking about here?) has an infectious enthusiasm but poor aul' Sean can hardly get a word in. - At least that's how I thought it was for the first week, we've been in an immobile home in the West of Ireland for the last 2 weeks so it's been saorview TG4 on a 19 inch "tube" all the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭Diarmuid

He's poor as a commentator. He can talk forever, which is no mean feat but there are too many negatives to ignore.

Apart from getting things wrong, mis-reading the race, missing the key moments, etc. my personal peeve is his habit of make sh1t up. He comes up with speculative reason for some incident, then repeats it later as if it was true. It becomes gospel over the following days.

One such example was Peter Kennaugh crash a week or so ago. From the video it was clear that he crashed and rolled down some embankment. Well, Carlton speculated that he fell into a hawthorn bush, hence all the cuts. The next day, that was repeated as fact. Today it was the so-called "public release" of Froome's power details.

It happens so much now that I just ignore it but I'd definitely prefer one of the other commentators. Quigley is in a different league and even Harmond does a far better job.

    Thank God for Kelly.

He doesn't bother me other than saying "chapeau" when any rider does even the remotest thing of note. It's kinda taken over from Kelly's constant saying "certaintly" really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭Columbia

He is a little bit repetitive, but he's got a fairly difficult job. He was on the air for 6 hours yesterday with a relatively limited amount of stuff happening on the road.

By the end of the tour he'll have clocked up probably 70 hours on air, I challenge anybody to broadcast for that long without repeating a lot of stuff.

What I can't understand, however, is how he and Kelly so regularly misinterpret (or completely fail to interpret) the very basic data and timings that come up on screen.

He's also been a bit of a cheerleader for Sky and Cavendish, but I think he's improved on that in the last couple of days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

They work off the data they get from the organisers and it seems like a lot of the time it's either wrong, such as wrong rider details, or just not there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

His repeated speculation that Froome was 'gifting' the stage to Quintana was annoying alright. Also his constant talking about the 'Idiot' fans was a bit much, they weren't that bad.

All that chuckling at his own little witticisms, it does grate a small bit. But then he riffs on endearingly about French republican ideals and peace in Europe, or whatever, and it's hard to stay annoyed with him.

Kelly does far more outrageous things to the English language with far fewer words, but so what ?

I wish CK would tap Kelly for more solid info on technical things, for example. They both missed a glaringly interesting point on the stage after Ventoux - twice the tv director did a close-up of Froome's oval chainring. Now that is a little curiosity for the average non-expert viewer, if you really must talk all the time.

edit - just realised I haven't finished watching that stage yet. Maybe he will mention the chainring.
edititit - he did, just after the point I paused it... doh !

Carlton did talk about the oval chainrings and how they eliminate flat spots one day... Another day he dismissed them as sudo science I think.
