Suana, steam room, jacuzzi- any health benefits at all?

    So, are there? :D

Seriously, I'm a bit of a cynic, and it seems to me that the alleged benefits of these activities are over-rated, if not completely bogus. My local gym/pool clusters the three in a "health suite", but I can't find anything conclusive to indicate that it deserves such a name. And I'm talking about longer-term benefits, not losing water weight before a weigh-in or anything like that. I'm open to correction though.

Jacuzzis freak me out. It's like having a bath with a buñch of strangers..plus warm water, sweaty bodies..germs bleurch!

I find steam rooms great for bunged up sinuses, just like putting your head over a bowl of boiling water and vicks.

I never saw the appeal of the dry heat in the sauna.

    I'm skeptical

Sauna plus multidisciplinary treatment may reduce chronic pain more effectively than multidisciplinary treatment alone. Sauna reduces chronic pain more effectively than cognitive behaviour therapy. It is indicated for rheumatic pain (with cold shower) but not for neuropathic pain.[46] Is effective for appetite loss and mild depression.[47] Indicated in reducing symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome,[48][49] and rheumatoid arthritis,[50] and indicated for anorexia nervosa.[51] Sauna has been proposed for treatment of other conditions glaucoma,[52] Sjogren syndrome,[53] chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia,[54] anorexia nervosa, obstructive lung disease,[55] recuperation after childbirth, and also for lifestyle related diseases of, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and smoking induced symptoms.[56]

Many of the sauna therapeutic trials used a regular schedule of at least 5 days a week and often daily for one to three months, then several times a week for extended periods.[48][57][58]

I do just find it relaxing anyway

Good for the skin and pores but not much benefit if you go in wearing a bathing suit.

what if youre in your own jacuzzi?

That would be fine..I don't mind my own sweat and germs! 😉

There'd be no strangers sitting in my bath with me either which would also be a bonus

Personally I find the steam room does wonders for releasing muscle stiffness from exercise, especially if you do some simple stretches after you leave it.

My old gym used to have one and I used it on most visits, My new gym doesn't have a steam room or sauna (Although its substantially cheaper!!) and I defiantly feel the stiffness the next day far more with out the use of a steam room.

Then again it could all just be in my head :P

I'd be the same - my gym has all 3 and up to last week I'd use the steam room and jacuzzi after a workout. I've noticed more stiffness and fatigue since not using it though. However, that could be coincidental or even all in my head.

I find the sauna great for a hangover if you drink heaps of water in there :D

Relaxation has long term health benefits so anything that helps you relax not just the body but the mind is good for you I guess ;)

I've also been told it's good for muscle recovery to go from workout to cold shower to steam room to cold shower to sauna to cold shower, then I hop into Jacuzzi before proper shower and getting dressed.

The Steam Room I use has great acoustics too, great for an oul song or whistle.

Steam room with a few drops of eucalyptus oil is hard to beat not sure of health benefits but I do feel better after it plus the shave afterwards is brilliant
