MapMyRun - no smartphone

Is there any other way to map a run outside of smartphone apps?

I do not have a smartphone and after some horrendous treatment at the hands of our largest mobile provider it is unlikely I will ever use a bill pay phone again - so it looks like Im going to be on basic pay as you go phones from now on.

So if you are not and will not be a smart phone user, is there any other device that you can use to do the same thing as mapmyrun?

Why not just stick it into Google Maps when you're done.

Not sure if the below works as it's filtered from work but it should show a map with the distance run.

To track your speed and position you'll need GPS. Which means either a smart phone or a GPS watch. Check out Garmin watches.

You can get a GPS watch, Garmin do'em. Fairly popular from what I hear. Not too sure on price range for'em.

The price of some GPS watches is more than a smart phone though... At least with the phone you'd get more than just GPS.

Yeah, they are expensive. I may have to leave it. Thanks for all the help.

Their issue regarding a smart phone was data usage though wasn't it?

There is no data usage with them watches. Also, OP, if you check out Amazon every now and then, they do be on sale.

i have a smart phone, and i use mapmyrun you do not need to have a Connection for Mapmyrun to work, i have no money in my pay as you go account i just wait till i get home and use my wifi to upload my run.

    Or

You could take a Stop watch time your Run go home and map the Route out in mapmyrun at home and type in the time it took you.

Thats a really good idea, I already use a stopwatch, I will check out if its possible to map it (seeing as its on private property paths in a park) like this.

There's no data for GPS with a smart phone either.

Keep an eye on ebay and amazon, both have deals on gps watches, and it is possible to get a decent gps watch and heart monitor for under 100euros. I got a gps/hr monitor system called Ultrasport for 95e recently from Amazon, and it works fine..

I did this and it's worked for me. It's a little bit rough as the path I use is not mapped so I have been creative and manually drawn a cross country outline, but it's good enough to give me a rough idea of things. Thanks for the advice.

A lot of the Apps on Android use google maps, which requires data.

I stopped using my phone and now use a Garmin Forerunner.

Smart phones are to big to run with, with a watch you can easily glance at it to check progress etc. you also don't have to worry about it getting wet.

Before you mention arm bands. I find my arms to big for them and also find them really uncomfortable.
