Thought shed have got more because the country has more money these days.

They probably realised how ridiculous it was to be giving money for a debs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭Shanotheslayer

Cause us taxpayers don't want to pay for 18 year olds to get drunk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭robman60

I don't know, but a "welfare" payment to go to the debs reeks of boom madness.

You should be asking "Why was she given 200 euros 2 years ago?"

What a crazy country we live in.

Is there any chance your neighbour might register with Boards , come into AH and discuss it with us ?

First I heard of it. Ridiculous.
It's worse that the wans getting the handout for the holy communion.
No wonder the country is the way it is.

Scroungers and layabouts getting everything handed to them.

Because it was ludicrous for the taxpayer to pay for people's debs?

Seriously, do people think welfare payment is reward system where the state pays you for every single thing you do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 655 ✭✭✭HurtLocker

    *Sigh*
It seems this country is divided loosely in terms of people who pay for everything they do and consume and people who think they are entitled to the same lifestyle for free on other people's taxes

Tell you neighbour to shut up or save up.

Payment for sons but none for the daughter - the cwo must be sexist! Get on to Joe!

Is this a joke, does such a payment exist? The OP has to be playing around.

It did exist , I remember a radio show talking to a woman who went to her cwo twice first time for money for her daughters debs dress and then then the 2nd time for a payment for lingerie to go under said debs dress ,when questioned why she went to the cwo her reply "I'm only getting what I'm entitled to"

The only thing that shocks me is that people seem to be consistently shocked at the way this country is run and the nonsense that is tolerated, day in, day out. Seriously, do some of ye only stick your heads out from underneath your rocks on a yearly basis or is even that asking too much?

I get where you're coming from and I'd agree with you if were talking about an education payment or a medial payment but this a DEBS payment. This particular issue is not a case of divide and conquer politics - this is actually a case of a sensible austerity measure.

Well there's the communion dress payment.

    Do they still do that?

No, its been gotten rid of. Threads in atheism and Christianity forums.

The reasoning behind such things tends to be along the lines of "sure other people are doing it, they cant be left out just because they have less money. They need limos, helicopters and huge parties to keep up"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,492 ✭✭✭Sir Oxman

Some people are very gullible - CWO payments are discretionary, IF there is a smidgin of truth in the OP (I doubt it), it would be discretionary and therefore there is no 'Debs payment'
IF the CWO paid out for that, he/she should be sacked.

It's the same payment - you claim 'exceptional needs/expenditure', and they may or may not pay out (until it was abolished).

Ever heard of divide and conquer politics?,well that's what's happening in Ireland now.Seperate people into groups, stem the risk of uprising/protest.

In all honesty Celly, theres little dividing to be done, and as for conquering...forget it.

All we are seeing now is the belated arrival of commonsense to a country with a strong aversion to it.

It could well be said that when Walt Disney decided to set up in Europe,he really should have chosen Ireland rather than France,as he would have had little or no set-up costs to create his Magic Kingdom.....

Right now the only oppression being meted out is to the dwindling group of productively inclined people who continue to try the "Working for a Living" route, and it's becoming a far harder road to travel, when one looks at how the Taxes levied upon this group is being disbursed.

I have found the Annual Statistical Reports of the DSP to be hugely educational in so many different ways and would recommend them to those requiring a good Nightime Read...

    Here's 2011's.....

    http://www.welfare.ie/en/downloads/2011stats.pdf

The Debs Dancing would come under the heading of Supplementary Welfare Allowance-Exceptional Needs Payments,Other Exceptional Welfare Allowance Payments and Urgent Needs Payments.

Page 47 Section C17 is where it gets suitably indistinct.....;)
    General:

    Other
    3,665

    Travel Costs
    2,196

    Insufficient Means
    2,595

    Heating
    1,301

    Lost/Stolen Money
    145

    Household Budget
    144

    Total : 10,045

This is in 000's of € BTW,so the 2011 "General" total was €10,045,000 (Plus "Urgent Needs Payments of €190,000)

The beauty of it is that one will struggle to find Debutante's Ball's mentioned at all,but the term "Other" can cover whatever you want it to....;)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Payments come under the discretion of the CWO.

    These offices should be closed.

There is a divide and conquer in Ireland but I dont believe this is the case. Its more the recognition of a part of society which feels overly entitled.

My old school last year couldn't afford to turn on the heating most the time or fix dampness in the ceiling. Its a bit of a joke if people are being given free money for completely discretionary expenditure. The Government wants to stop giving public money i.e medical cards to non terminal cancer patients. Giving money purely to rent a suit and buy drink is a joke and makes a joke of all the extra tax people are paying and the cuts in service return they get back.

When I want something discretionary the state never helps me. I have to either plan in advance and save up or go without . It's quite simple.

if true, that SW officer should be sacked. but as they are a state employee, this kind of gross incompetence would probably see them promoted.

Under a certain income people receive a hell of a lot of welfare.Any family that has two kids of college going age and any other kids in schooling are under as much financial strain as most people receiving benefits. This debs payment was a joke.
