I think we should have a thread for the simple questions we have always wondered but never got around to asking!

    Can anyone answer these?

When you are at a port and you see loads of boats anchored down and out in the water, how does the owner get to it?

Why does the external temperature gauge in a car give a higher reading than the apparent highest temperature of the day according to Met Eireann?

Via a smaller boat. Some boats are too big to come very far in.

    They're quite inaccurate.

Q: Hi all, why is it that the sky is blue. Could never figure it out.

A: There is a layer of blue gas called the aquasphere that makes the sky blue!

    What a great thread! Thanks!

Im pretty sure this has to do with the car itself, the heat of the engine or the greenhouse effect of inside the car.

Some else smart than me answer better question.

Yeah, my car temp read 34C yesterday, it wasn't anywhere near that outside, prob 26-27 at most. The car is sitting there cooking in the sun, its made of metal and the dash is has glass in it so it's going to retain a higher temp than it actually is, usually once you start driving and cooler air is circulating around the body of the car the dash gauge will drop right down.

Why is it, when you stand very close to a mirror at, say, chest height and look down "into" the mirror, you can see a reflection of your shoes in the mirror....even though the mirror can't "see" you shoes......if you know what I mean?

If every cell in the body is replaced after 7 years, why do tattoos not vanish?

If the umbilical cord provides the baby with blood, why isn't there a vein/artery behind your belly button?

No - we've seen Nelson's dad in a number of episodes. And he looks like Nelson.

    .

But what happens to the smaller boat? Does that mean you need to have someone drive you out because you don't see boats towing another too often and the boats out to sea which I am talking are really only small pleasure boats...

Properties of light. Light bounces off your shoes, reflects off the mirror and then hits your eyes. That's how we see anything.

    1. How would you describe a colour to a blind person ?

    2. Do blind people dream? Suppose the person was deaf as well, what then ?

    3. If you had a vacuumed ball, with a mirror finish inside it and somehow managed to get a light reflecting about inside it - would it be indefinitely lit inside it ?

Does centrifugal force from the earth spinning so fast have any effect on gravity?

i.e if the earth was not spinning would gravitational force be greater

Not as far as I'm aware. Newton's law of universal gravitation doesn't really suggest so.

Why can't we have passenger boats that go as fast as passenger planes? I can think of some problems, but is there anything which represents a hard limit?

No, however it does result in the "Coriolis Effect"

How do people who are deaf from birth think thoughts?
I know you don't construct sentences in your head like "I need a pint of milk", but a deaf person's thought process must be much different.

If a person was raised in the Gaeltacht and hadn't a lick of English and were subsequently taught it, what sort of accent would they have?

Do people sleep when theyre in a coma?

Power to weight ratios and water and air resistance.

Can someone give me a brief synopsis of exactly what's going on in Syria right now?

Why can't we have passenger boats that go as fast as passenger planes? I can think of some problems, but is there anything which represents a hard limit?

Because all planes have to deal with is air which is far less dense than water. Depending on how aerodynamic the plane is, it can just cut through the atmosphere.

Furthermore, if you travel outside the stratospehere, there's greater room for speed as there's much less elements to battle with, as the air and thus the atmosphere, is thinner. Go out unto the void of space, and there's even less. There's virtually nothing stopping you.

There's a theoretical ceiling on how fast it can go, but its far higher than the ceiling for a boat.

Also, when you're flying 700mph on a plane, youre in a tightly controlled, pressurised environment.
Travelling on a boat at the same velocity, at sea level, you'd have to contend with G forces and extremely high winds and waves as a result of crashing into waves at ridiculous speeds. i.e. It wouldn't be a very comfortable journey.

I've always wondered if animals have an inner monologue like we do, and if so is it in barks, or miaows, or whistles, or whatever type of noise they vocally make.
