Can this heat affect weight?

My weight has gone up by 2 lbs since this hot spell, and I am wondering if it is due to heat. I am nowhere near my period (still in the follicular phase), so it's not that. I also haven’t eaten anything crazy, drank alcohol or done anything that would cause my body to go up in weight.

I feel thirsty all the time and have a headache most days. I am drinking till the cows come home, but I still have the headache so I must be dehydrated a bit.

Any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

You've pretty much answered your own question there, if there only thing you're doing differently is drinking more water then that's where the extra weight is coming from.

A litre of water can weight around 2lbs

I agree it is most likely the water.

In warm weather you will need a bit less fuel/food since you are not expending as much energy in keeping your body warm. Some anorexics are known to take cold baths to use up more energy staying warm. I saw a program of a open water long distance swimmer who fattened up before a really long swim and lost a few kilos during it. This effect is not that great and would not be causing a 2lb difference.

    2lbs isn't much. if your 10 stone thats 140lb, which is 1.4%

you may weigh the same, but the calibration in the scales might have changed.

are you weighign yourself at the same time of day?

Yes, am weighing in the morning. That's kind of why I am wondering. It's not like I am drinking litres of water in the night, so surely my weight shouldn't be up in the mornings..

I imagine that a mechanical scales could be affected by heat?

Water weight, full bowels, full bladder, scales is off......its two pounds, unless your weighing in for a fight its not enough to worry about. I can vary 2kg from one day to another.

are you drinking litres because you are massively thirsty or because you think you need to drink that much?

I am drinking loads because I am thirsty all the time. I also have a condition that causes me to lose sodium very easily, so even in normal weather I can get low on sodium. So anyway, I started taking sodium pills yesterday and for once I didn't have headaches. Plus, my weight was more normal this morning. Still up, but not as much.

I wonder does the body swell when it is low in electrolytes. It must do!

....how has this actually become a thread...

and someone talking about anorexics taking ice baths - your 2lbs gain doesn't scream crisis.

....what has happened to this forum....

It's the same as it's always been. Someone came on and asked something they were unsure of, people answered. I actually didn't know the point about anorexics taking baths and found it interesting.

I wouldn't worry about a 2lbs weight gain OP, it's nothing. Most likely just water weight.

it's not only 2lb its also only 20+ degrees, it's hardly hot, it's just a little hotter than usual.

a littel bit of sun in this country and the whole place starts panicking.

I thought the point about anorexics and ice baths to be about as useful as recommending some laxatives for weight loss.

As my mam says, "If you don't have anything nice to say, it's best to say nothing at all".

You know nothing about me. I actually used to have an eating disorder, so while 2 lbs may mean nothing to you, it means something to me since I have been up 2lbs every mornng since the weather heated up. I also gained shedloads of weight due to hormonal issues a few years back (even though I was actually undereating because I had an eating disorder), so gaining weight suddenly makes me fear that will happen again.

I posted to ask whether heat could cause weight gain. I didn't ask to be judged. You might freak about 2 lbs if you had my history. Walk a mile in my shoes and all...

Can understand where you're coming from OP. Thankfully, never had an ED as such but me and my weight have had issues in the past and still have a love/hate relationship (more love these days thankfully) but I get how even a small gain can be extremely disheartening.

Might be best to leave the scales for a week or two. Your weight (if you're not actively losing or haven't got lots to lose) is probably better viewed over a longer period of time to get a better picture of what your true weight is. Maybe give the scales a week's holiday and see how the ground lies next week.

To answer your original query, heat can affect weight, but so can a million other factors so don't panic yet :)

Do you actually think I was recommending they should take ice baths to lose weight?

Try reading my post again, esp. the last sentence.
