Cheapest Way to hold shares

Hi, I have a friend who has a substantial enough holding in a UK plc. He has it as a long term investment so won't likely be selling out in a major hurry.

Initially he did it with the online share platform (Sharewatch?) but has had to switch it over to the TD Woodhouse one. He has had a lot of problems doing this and is also now going to be charged a monthly fee.

Given he does not trade or intend to regularly, what is best and cheapest way for him to hold the shares? I though in paper but can he still do that and if so how? Or are there any other options to hold it with at no substantial cost?

    Thanks.
