Never did psychology but in Arts, you can study "Psychological Studies" with another three Arts subjects. If you do well enough in first year, you then do a BA in Psychological Studies with One other Arts subject. AFAIK, it's the top 100 or so in first year Psychological Studies who get to keep it on but open to correction. The very best of the class can transfer from the BA into a straight out psychology degree.
If you finish your BA inPsychological Studies, you can then do a 1 year conversion HDip in Psychology which covers all the stuff you missed out on in the BA.
    Hope this helps.

Hi, I did arts a few years ago in NUI. Can confirm what lockstep said, but you might need to check the information is current. If you take psychology as a subject in arts, there are three outcomes.

    1) You get in the top 10 - 15 students (out of several 100). This allows you to do a full psychology degree, but you drop your other subject. As a ballpark, you need around 80% in your exams for this.

    2) You get in the top 100. Your degree will be in psychology and another subject, and you can top it up to a full psy degree with another year's study.

    3) You don't get in the top 100. You can't continue on in psychology. You pick 2 of your other 3 subjects for your degree.

Ok thank you :) And fair play to you brilliant. What you planning to do now? Can I ask you how many books did you need for the first year and what other subjects did you do?

I'm going to UL this September to do a masters in psychology. It's a conversion course so hopefully this time next year I'll have have a full psych degree :)

As regards to books I'd get one called introduction to psychology, it's compiled by nuig and available in the bookshop in college. I'm sure they'll tell you about it during your first week! My ofter subjects in first year were soc and pol, history and geography.

    Hope that helps! :)

Are you happy to complete your degree in one of the other options if you find you don't like psychology, if you don't make it into the top 100 or if you don't pass your other subjects first time?

I guess, I do want psychology and not sure what else I would do but I would continue on in something to get the degree I wouldnt waste the opportunity. Why do you ask?

I think pg633 is encouraging you to have a plan B, in case psychology doesn't work out. Getting in the top 15 is doable, top 100 moreso, but it's going to be hard work, and if you go for top 15, some of your other subjects will likely suffer. The trick is not to let them suffer below 40% : )

The format of the psy exam when I was there was a large amount of short questions. If it hasn't changed, a good approach is to revise your lectures that evening, and keep a file with the answers to any questions that could potentially be asked. You could also get a good idea of what's coming up from past exam papers. That way, when the exam comes along, you have everything in one place.

A question that might be a good one to ask yourself is why you are going to college. If the reason is to improve your employment opportunities, consider what subjects are more practical and likely to create those opportunities. It's something I wish I'd thought about more : )

That's good that you are going in with a definite plan. Will definitely make study a lot easier if you are motivated and interested in the subject. Good luck with your studies!

I'm actually planning on the exact same thing! From what i've researched once you get your level 8 Honours Degree in Psychology you need another 4 years or either/or/both further study or work experience to become a member of the psychological society of Ireland. ( or so ive read anyway)

At present theres only one Forensic Psychology Masters in the country - UCC.

Best of luck and i'll see ya in class! :)

I'm doing Psychology GY104 as a mature student. Yea the options are pretty limited here, i'd love to be able to go to Canada or the US to do a masters - you'd get a great forensic psychology degree over there. but its all about the monies  I think theres only like 4 forensic psychologists in Ireland and one of them is a lecturer in NUIG. Do you know what other arts subjects you're going to do?

Ah im jealous lucky you. Exactly who has monies right now lol, my sister is over in Canada and loves it its like a different world. I have thought of London or Canada when Im finished studying here I really believe there is nothing here anymore. I'd like to do sociology and political studies, philosophy, I wanted to do children's studies but I was told I cant so I might go for French I think its good to have a language. Are you going to the return to learning programme in August?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭Lockstep

Canada or the US would be cripplingly expensive for a masters but you could do study abroad program as part of Arts in the US or Canada which would be very handy.
As for masters, UK is a great bet. I'm not doing psychology but masters here are a lot cheaper.

I was hoping to do German but its restricted and so is psychology :( I did French in secondary school so i'd like to try a different language. I'll probably do Soc and Pol and maybe the classics. I always liked ancient Greek mythology. Dunno what else though, nothing really interests me! I'm still working till the end of August so i'll prob go to the Monday of the programme - just to meet some of the others and see the campus a bit better. I'm missing the orientation because i'm on holidays... ooopps! Do you think you'll go?
