Cyclist assulted

Hi Guys, FYI, if you are cycling around the Rush, Lusk, Skerries area be aware that a cyclist was pulled off his bike and savagely assulted about the head and face by an enraged motorist <snip> For anyone that knows the area these roads are very busy at the best of times. Investigations are ongoing with Gardai. The cyclist up to yesterday evening was still in hospital.

So in essence there is a very angry man in a Mitsubishi Pajero out in North County Dublin who has an issue with cyclists. So Beware.

    thanks for the info.

Hopefully the injured party heals quickly and is not too traumatised by the incident.

Rather apt that Pajero can't be used as a trademark in Spain as it means something that rhymes with banker but beings with w.

Absolute scum, hope he gets caught and done for assault.

Wow, any cctv there at all might pick up the reg passing a garage/shop etc

That's an horrific incident. Something similar but not as serious happened to me a number of years ago at the Spawell traffic lights in Tallaght/Telpleogue.

The Ban Garda at the local Garda station (Rathfarnam) questioned whether I should have been cycling on the road / whether there was a cycle lane there - and wasn't at all concerned about the assault.

Hope he has a successful and speedy recovery.

Has there been any confirmation of the colour of the Pajero vehicle..it could help assist cyclists as a potential "warning beacon" just in case. How are the Gardai communicating this information to the general public?

As a cyclist around those parts - that's bloody sick to hear. I sincerely hope this guy is caught and locked up.

And the girl with the rope incident last week.

Also when we were doing our 1LifeCycle last year between the exit from the Phoenix Park and a junction with a set of light and church (I can't remember the name of it!), one of the girls with us received a solid lump of turf in the side of her face. Young lads in front of a set of apartments threw it the little HIts.

If I get any further info that can help fellow cyclists I will post it so at least you can keep an eye out for it, including myself.

Hi Guys, FYI, if you are cycling around the Rush, Lusk, Skerries area be aware that a cyclist was pulled off his bike and savagely assulted about the head and face by an enraged motorist who had nearly collided with the cyclist in Rush, North County Dublin late last week. The driver of the Mitsubishi Pajero stopped ahead of the cyclist and waited for the cyclist to approach then attacked him. The motorist then left the scene and left the cyclist lying in the roadway. For anyone that knows the area these roads are very busy at the best of times. Investigations are ongoing with Gardai. The cyclist up to yesterday evening was still in hospital.

So in essence there is a very angry man in a Mitsubishi Pajero out in North County Dublin who has an issue with cyclists. So Beware.

A link to this thread was posted on the NCD forum. Have you any more details such as the time, date and exact location in Rush that might help witnesses and businesses/private householders with CCTV identify the guy in the Pajero to the Garda? I live locally and this is the first I heard of it.

God I know those road really well. There is no excuse for this kind of thing regardless of what goes on. I've been in those situations myself on a few occasions and was lucky enough to be able to handle myself.

As a Rush person I am very sorry to hear this has happened, its the first time I have heard of this type of assault out here.

There must be info on the vehicle involved, colour, year of reg, time of day...... There is no shortage of CCTV around Rush.

I sincerely hope the cyclist in question makes a quick and full recovery is back out on the roads again enjoying the beautiful North Dublin countryside.

Good question, I live in Rush and the OP post is still the only mention. Like all towns an incident like this would be a hot news topic. Nothing in the local media too.

No not as yet. Was informed it was a rider from the Dundalk Area. It seems to be gone cold. But will keep my ear to the ground, I know a few lads from that area and will see them ovet the coming weeks. If I find out anything I will post it. Be assured.

Thanks, might have been more helpful do had you provided a fresher update and information to the questions asked such as the specific time and location of attack. A lot harder to jog potential eyewitnesses memories a month after the incident.

Well to be fair it was most likely a gangland shooting and one of the injured parties was the gunman who shot himself in the leg as he tried to escape. Both men are being treated in hospital. Not sure it qualifies as a anti-cyclist attack though.

Slightly off topic but I've given up cycling those roads lately, between Rush, Lusk through Donabate and Portrane. Constantly being overtaken by cars almost brushing off you as they go by.

    Rope incident?

I've seen pictures on Facebook form Downhill/Enduro friends of ropes on popular bike trails around the dublin/wicklow mountains that some group of hikers are putting up to deter cyclists from using the area.
One of the scummiest things I've ever seen.

There was a girl in town knocked off a Dublin bike by some little nitbags who held a rope stretched across the road. Got her in the neck.

I use these roads on a bike every day throughout the year either cycling to the train station or out on the road bike and never encounter problems with drivers brushing off me. In fact the majority of drivers show a lot of courtesy by indicating and pulling out to give as much room as possible when overtaking. You might get the odd one that overtakes agressively but i would encounter this anywhere.

Oh Sweet Divine! What next  That stetyrrell is something I had not heard of and Hope to God won't encounter in person! Wish her Best Wishes in her Recovery though & that it won't deter her from cycling again.

Thought my cycle today was bad with a touring bus nearly clipping me; jaunts going through red-lights against me cycling and motorists going through the green with right-of-way and then encountering local motorists bombing it on rural roads that cannot accommodate a cyclist and a motorist safely! They are clearly not used to cyclists in 'their' area but I will be back though as it was a great training route!

    No Idea.

The are was also used by Quad and Moto rides though, so might have been to deter them.

A lot of hikers are convinced that cyclists are ripping up the trails and ruining them, messing up the clear tracks to follow etc, and littering.

Certainly not worthy of decapitating them and causing grevious bodily harm.

I cycle through those 4 places several times per week (on my work commute) and have had a few near-misses and one accident. I wouldn't say it's any different to any other area. The most dangerous part IMO is the junction of the R128 and Spout Road in Rush whereas Donabate and Portrane are fairly quiet.

Andy - are you cycling too close to the edge of the road (thereby encouraging motorists to pass when it may not be safe to do so?)

    I blame that gobsh**e George Hook !

Its even reached peaceloving Galway. Try cycling on the Spiddle - Barna line on a Sunday ... Our club just avoids the area due to at least 3 incidents where things got "a little bit heated"

Hopefully, the fact the victim is a Garda will mean that it gets investigated and hopefully prosecuted seriously. Now if only Gardai would take other offences against cyclists seriously...

You get a lot of insane cyclists charging down those trails at speed, and walkers feel that they wreck the land and erode it; it's also not that safe if you're walking with kids and some lunatic is racing along expecting everyone to jump out of the way.

So trying to decapitate someone is an appropriate way to deal with these issues then?

I remember passing some hiker types all North Faced up with their superfluous walking poles, tut-tutting about mountain bikers as they gestured to what any idiot could tell were motorbike tracks.

I didn't have the heart to point out that Coillte had had to build a boardwalk to protect the land from erosion caused by thousands of hikers tramping all over the place wrecking the land with their hiking boots.

Seriously. Where did he say that? A nonsense reply.

This is the problem when these issues come up. Rather than deal with facts, you get strawman arguments like the above.

Walkers will say there are some idiot cyclists not sharing the trail. What they won't say is they should be decapitated.

Like most things in life, you need to call out the assholes ruining it for everyone, that includes those on the trail, militant walkers, and red light jumpers.

Relax. I think Seaneh thought that the post was Qualitymark making an excuse for hikers tying rope to stop bikers on the trails. It does look that way in the context.

Because depending on the trail, it may not be permitted.

Here's the rules for the Wicklow Mountains National Park:
    http://www.wicklowmountainsnationalpark.ie/WheeledActivities.html
The public roads running through the Park are used for competitive cycling, as well as for touring. Bicycles also use some un-surfaced forestry-type roads and wider surfaced tracks. Off-road cycling is not allowed due to the damage it can cause to sensitive habitats.

Coillte of course allows cycling on designated trails, otherwise cycling is forbidden.
    http://www.coillte.ie/aboutcoillte/recreation/bye_laws/
    hicles, cycles, etc.
    9. (1) A person shall not use on Coillte lands any vehicle, cycle, skateboard,
roller skates or blades, or any similar mode of conveyance, except—
    (a) in such areas,
    (b) on such routes, and
    (c) where applicable, of such engine power or capacity,
    as may be designated.
    (2) A person shall not use on Coillte lands any mode of conveyance, except
on such places and on such routes as may be designated in respect of the mode
    of conveyance concerned.
