As far as I know the calorific content is related to the alcohol content, so even the 'light' beers are still pretty high. The only truly low-calorie ones are alcohol-free.

I've moved this to Nutrition & Diet, you'll get more helpful replies here.

    Cheers

    Plumped for Bulmers Light.

At 2.95 a can, I won't be doing that again!

Corona light is nice enough...99 calories per bottle.

Regular Bulmers is low enough in calories and has the added bonus of not screaming "I'm on a diet!" when in company.

Have a full tasting, full bodied beer/cider you like, just don't have so many. If its your cheat day, then have as much as you want just don't have any the other days. If you want one everyday, then incorporate it into your daily calorie allowance.

What do you call low enough? Regular Bulmers is 210 per pint. Same as a pint of Guinness.

Point was about not having an obviously low drink. Longneck bulmers is about 120 compared to about 85 for the light one. Jumping from a 210-230 calorie pint per round to a bottle for 120 is a far more significant saving than Bulmers to Light (longnecks) and, as you said, you're getting a proper drink too.

The cover of a Mens Health in my eyeline on a shelf says "Eat bacon, drink vodka, get slim!".

If you're out with your mates, it's not just about getting drunk, its the shooting the sh1t, having the craic. Instead of going round for round drinking low calorie tasteless stuff, I'd rather drink a bit slower, and skip the odd round.

Edit: And if its only one night a week, make healthy options the rest of the week, and make the night out your cheat day/night.

  • If going for a binge (not recommended by health professions!) there really is no "good option". You can skip some sugars etc by sticking to spirits and calorie free drinks, but if you drink any alcohol to excess it will have a fairly hefty calorific content.

The above is spot on advice, if you're going to have a big night, earn it, enjoy it, and get back on track as soon as possible after. I find one of the biggest problem with having a "blowout" every so often is making the right choices the next day, get your food sorted before you start and be disciplined the following day.

Absolutely, this is half the problem with alcohol. It's not just the 10 pints you have the night before, its the kebab on the way home, and the next day your energy levels are below normal, you're dehydrated, electrolytes are all over the place, and in my early twenties, manys a day after a session, I didn't feel the energy to cook, so I got something greasey delivered, so it's no longer about the one nights drinking, its now two days worth of eating and drinking the wrong stuff. And however difficult it is to out train a few pints, out training a weekend full of bad choice is nigh on impossible.

So before you go out, make sure you have you're healthy go-to snacks in the fridge and a healthy dinner ready to go, so that there is more effort in ringing dominos than there is in putting it all together. Also have some bottles of water in the fridge. I find the morning after a skinful, with a mouth like a badgers tail and my body temperature slightly too high for comfort, I can drink whatever is cold in the house, by the gallon, and as soon as I run out of cold water, a couple cans of very cold coke start to look very appealing.

Bulmers is one of the highest calories out there per unit alcohol. its loaded with sugar. Guinness is actually one of the lower ones, its just a little more than the "light" versions. Guinness is 170kcal per 500ml can, its one of the few drinks who did quote kcals on cans. Online resources for alcohol are notoriously inaccurate, the recipes change world wide.

I would suggest avoiding rounds completely. I have seen heineken & bulmers for 5.50 per longneck, thats €9.47 per pint. I would rather get a half pint and be called <insert pathetic effeminate name> than hand over hard earned cash and have the publican look at me like an overpaying sucker. I usually get stronger bottles of beers and get half pint glasses, the macho men who have commented on my glass usually shut up when its point out its stronger.

Also you cannot just look at the ratios of calories, the extra calories in regular bulmers is due to the sugar, which will lead to more weight gain in most people. Some heavy drinkers need not pay nearly as much attention to alcohol calories.
For example, weight gain was negligible in alcoholics who were given 2,000 calories of alcohol daily on top of the 2,500 calories from foods they consumed to maintain their weight. But when the same number of additional calories were fed as chocolate, a steady weight gain resulted.
