I never said it wasn't performing well, I just said it's fairly well known that normal Coke is more popular due to it's taste (which it is).

That was meant in jest! :p

But you said the poor quality of the taste of Coke Zero is well-documented...but it's not?

Just type in Coke Zero is disgusting into Google or Yahoo answers and you'll get a load of results. Why do you think more people buy normal Coke despite it having more calories?

    Part of the reason people have unfounded fears over artificial sweeteners is due to the warning on the label accompanying products with aspartame;

    "Contains a source of phenylalanine"

Important, but only for people with a rare genetic disorder called phenylketonuria or those on certain drugs. Otherwise completely harmless in normal amounts.

Diet drinks though taste horrible, I cannot understand anyone who can sincerely claim they can't tell the difference (that is unless they're shilling for CocaCola or Pepsico!). I'd rather no sugar than artificial sweetener because it tastes better, not because of any scaremongering.

If you type in "Coke Zero is good" you'll get just as many results. People's opinions on internet forum about what they think of a product is hardly "well documented" information!

I've said already that people have different tastes. More people buy Coke than any other drink as it is one of the most marketed, established and recognised brands in the world. That doesn't prove that Coke Zero is considered disgusting!

WTF are you on about? It's a legal requirement to state the inclusion of phenylalanine, what has that got to do with aspartame??

Some people like UHT milk, we're not going to say they're entitled to their opinion now are we? Has society crumbled that far?

Diet drinks taste like crap to me.
I'd prefer to consume sugar over sweeteners and the likes. Moderation is the key really.
People who drink Diet Coke, seem to tend to drink a lot of Diet Coke, probably cos they've convinced themselves is healthy.
If I want non-sugary drink, I drink water.

Coke is too sugary for me and leaves a gloopy aftertaste so if push comes to shove ill pick Diet Coke but im not mad about the aftertase of that plus it does make you crave more food/sugary drinks afterwards so you dont really feel the benefit.

For the record, no carbonated drinks are good for you, you are effectively drinking air, air which stays in your stomach and intenstines if consumed in large amounts. Such air can cause stomach distending, bloating, excess gas, sharp pains etc. I was a demon for full fat coke and lucozade a few years ago, easily 3 cans of either a day, then I switched to Diet Coke and although I felt a bit healthier, my stomach was still puffed out, even when dieting and exercise. I gave up all fizzy drinks cold turkey for 18 months and bingo, problem solved, stomach deflated altogether, no gas problems, no bloating etc, fizzy drinks definitely cause havoc to your gut.

    Oh my.

so carbon dioxide is air now..? you are ingesting a gas. That gas comes back up, or comes out the other end. The gas when trapped will cause bloating and pains. There is no 'full fat' coke, there's no fat in it.

I'd normally buy a bottle of still mineral water if I were thirsty. I drink slimline tonic in vodka or gin, other than that I wouldn't have fizzy drinks very often. That being said we usually keep a bottle of coke and coke zero in the house for guests who drink it. I'd a horrible headache yesterday and needed a sugar hit, so I had some coke, tasted weird, not like I remember coke tasting at all.

Aspartame is a source of the amino acid phenylalanine.

My point was that people see a "warning" on the label of foodstuffs containing artificial sweetener and automatically assume it applies to them.

I wouldn't drink a soft drink more than two or three times a month, but when I do it' got to be full sugar, don't see the point in fake versions of things trying to be something else, things like decaffeinated coffee, non alcoholic beer, quorn and methadone. Do the real thing or don't bother.

There is no doubt that the real versions are much nicer but regular soft drinks have a massive amount of carbs so if you drink them regularly you are going to gain weight from them, I used to drink coke every day and cutting it out made a big difference. At weekends I still drink normal full sugar soft drinks both as mixers when drinking and to get the sugar rush for the hangover so if I have a soft drink midweek or a weekend I'm not hungover I try to stick to diet ones to balance out.

Do you take everything so literally? I think most people know that "full-fat" refers to sugar content when talking about soft drinks.

I prefer coke zero. Nothing to do with calories or sugar content, I just prefer the taste. I used to always drink coke, now it tastes too sweet, my mouth feels disgusting afterwards.

Am I meant to take it metaphorically? Full fat is used for reference to something that hasn't been reduced in fat like some products are. You can't just say something wrong and say well you should know what I mean. Im pointing out, rightly, that theres no fat in them.

I didn't know there was a link, as Im sure most wouldn't, so I don't think anyone is making that connection / presumption.

i have to declare from the start i work for Coca Cola, i have recently started drinking Coke Zero as my chosen soft drink...i find that once its served cold as advised the difference is minimal.
Also i can vouch that zero and original "red can" coke is made from identical flavourings .
Fantastic Company to work for btw!

Hate the sugary feeling coke gives me on my teeth, so coke zero for me. Much prefer full sugar sprite and 7up though.

    Water

    Neither. I would chose water!

Both are bad (aspartame vs. sugar) - Water only.

Prefer the full sugar ones but I mostly get the diet ones these days to try and reduce sugar/calorie intake.
For me it goes: Coke > Pepsi > Pepsi Max > Coke Zero >> Diet Coke. (never tried Diet Pepsi)
I can definitely taste the difference between Coke, Coke Zero and Diet Coke; people who can't need their tastebuds examined 'cause they're clearly faulty! :p

To me all diet drinks taste horrible. No calories defeats the purpose of a soft drink imo. Water is best, orange juice if I want some flavour, soft drinks are only for when you're at the cinema or watching a match or you're wrecked.

I love Diet Coke. No, it doesn't taste anything like standard coke but that's ok because coke is horrible.

Nothing as boring as the aspartame nazis. Unfortunately they seem to pontificate and lecture as much irl as online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭Foxhound38

Yep, must say I find the taste of the diet coke or coke zero far superior to the full fat stuff. Also don't make my mouth feel sticky and horrible.

If it were just a matter of calories I wouldn't care.

Spar cola is actually quite nice. Tastes like flat coke.
