The shetland's are a good well made boat a bit basic but perfect if you have kids or you want to do a bit of fishing as you won't mind it getting a bit dirty because it's easily cleaned :D
The biggest worry about older boats is older engines:D and how well they are looked after so add into the cost of the boat two full services on the engines.
There is a shetland owners club that would be worth joining if you do buy it http://www.shetlandowners.co.uk/shetland/

    Best of luck with her.

I just had a look at the add and one things that worries me is that he said the engine wasn't running right so he got a marine engineer to look at it for him  the engineer says that most likely the problem is that the impeller had been fitted the wrong way round and it would be a small job for the new owner :) from what I have found over the years if an impeller is put in the wrong way round it will right it's self as soon as it's started and if an impeller is gone the engine will still run fine for minute till it gets too hot, if the water is coming out the pee hole the impeller is working. For my own pice of mind I would be looking at doing a compression test done before handing over the money.
€ 3500 is in the ball park if the engines are ok.

no this is a private sale . i dont think the man that owns the boat can even turn on a computer :) . i am also getting the trailer and winter cover ever thing for 3500 euros as he want to buy a bigger boat as it is to cramped in the cabin for him as he is getting old . he,s 77 years young . i have seen the insureance papers and it is insured for 4000 pounds sterling . so am i getting a good deal he is will to accept 3500 euros as he has an account down in the south .. so that works out at 2900 pounds sterling . for everything ..should i buy it or not is what i am asking .

The price is about right and the paperwork checks out, should you buy it now thats the question "the happiest days of a boat owners life are the day they buy the boat and the day they sell it" :D As this will be you first boat I would prefer to see a newer engine maybe something like this http://www.donedeal.ie/boats-for-sale/shetland-570/5210346 saying that old engines can run for ever with a bit of TLC and new ones can sometimes break your heart but overall if you know nothing about engines a newer one is a safer bet.

thanks fergal for your advice . the man selling the boat was going to replace the engine . but the man that does all the work on his boat said there is nothing wrong with the engine on it . it,s running fine . so i am going to offer hime 3000 euro for it to cover my ass if the engine goes . what do you think . i should do . as 3000 euro is my budget really i would,nt like the engine to blow up in 2 or 3 months time as i would not have the money to replace it myself to be honest .

The only way to tell if the engine is good or not is by doing a compression test so if you know someone that knows engines bring them up to do one for you it's just a matter of taking out the spark plugs and screwing in a gauge if the pressure is good and the gearbox is good then everything else is a cheep enough fix. If you can take the boat out for a spin and see how she feels and sounds if your happy with it €3000 not bad for a boat and two engines but then again you just never know with boats :D I bet every one here that has bought a boat has been spending money on it ever since :pac:

No problem, if you do buy her and have any questions along the way just ask. If you are going to be towing her down to Dublin greece up the bearings and if possible find out what size they are and bring a spare set, you should be able to get them here for a few quid http://www.parnells.ie/parnell.swf also a spare tyre or a can of puncture repair, there is nothing worse than having to leave your boat at the side of the road while you go looking for bearings "well maybe leaving your boat while out on the water would be worse" :D
    Best of luck with her.

Just a word of caution - my buddy went down to west cork to collect a boat the other morning. Got about a mile and a half and a wheel came off and ended up in a field of briars - resulting in him spending the day fitting new bearings and wheels to the trailer. Make sure you confirm when the bearings were done and perhaps even get them replaced prior to towing it.

will do mate thanks . but i will not be towing it anywhere as i am berthing it in lakeland marina in kesh co fermanagh as it is already berthed there and the trailer is there too . i have a holiday home in kesh so i go there fishing .

    hi again ..
can some one help me find the year that a shetland 570 boat was built the number on the plate beside the cabin door is 5126 i have tryed to look it up but to no avail as i am a complete novice and have no way of checking this out . if any one could tell me i would be very gratefull . cheers .

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,352 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

From what I can find the 570 was built from 1970-80 with serial numbers going from 52 - 3039  the numbers should be on an oval plate saying "shetland boats" on the steering column.

cheers thanks fergal so it,s about 75 77 from the numbers i have . that are on a small silver plate on the steering column . so it is a classic there has been no modafications done to this boat what so ever all the orignal style the numer on the boat is . 411 she was never named she goes by 411 . was thinking of naming her but will wait and see .. what can you tell me about that number 411 ..

I'd say it's the UK boat registration number, they are bring them in here soon but I don't fancy sticking 4" stickers on the side of my boat

cheers man not really keen on them myself . can i remove them . in will be in the north all the time in lakelands marina . am thinking of navy blue curtains for the windows and 6 white boys to go around her . and remove the number or put white numbers on her what do you think . is it illegal to remove the numbers altogether ..

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,352 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

It might depend on what rivers and lakes you use it on some have their own rules but overall it's not law at the moment I think :)http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/legal/Web%20Documents/Legal%20Leaflets/Members%20Advice/Boat%20Registration%20in%20the%20UK/BOAT%20REGISTRATION%20IN%20THE%20UK.pdf

that,s good . on the insurance form the name of the boat is 411 . as she was never named at all . so i think i will have to leave the numbers on it but change them to white to match the white boys i,m buying for her with the blue curtains to match the canopy on her what,s your opinion . and thanks for all the help fergal . could i check the history of the boat by that number 411 and if so . how do i go about it .

Should look good, You might be able to find some info here
http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/owning-a-registered-pleasure-craft but as your number is so low it might be just a local number for that lake or where the last owners had her moored.

The best advice I could give you is to do a powerboat course this covers all types of boats not just so called "powerboats" http://www.dmgsailsports.com/powerboatcourses.php#IntroPB you will not be sorry and it will also stand to you when you go to insure the boat.

This is a handy site for parts and if you give them a call with your hull number they will be able to tell you the exact year it was made.
