Big Shake Up Expected at TV3 By Jeff Ford

Interesting article in The Mirror during the week:

    http://www.irishmirror.ie/whats-on/film-and-tv/tv3s-biggest-stars-worried-theyll-1988516

Even though most of the quotes are from a "source", it does give a good insider peek at what's going on inside TV3 at the moment since Ben Frow left, and Jeff Ford has come in.

The article goes through the list of trashy reality TV shows and British knock offs that haven't worked to be scrapped. This included Tallafornia, Dublin Wives, Alan Hughes Family Fortunes etc Hurray for that.

Also noted is that Jeff feels the daytime needs serious shake-up with Midday, Morning Show and Ireland AM all very similar type programmes. I'd say the likely one to get the chop is The Morning Show.

US imports is something that TV3 have moved away from in recent years, but hopefully Jeff will bring back some big hitters to the channel (and schedule them in a decent way)

I hope 3e is overhauled completely, or just change it to TV3+1 to put it out of its misery, as it's literally nearly doing that at the moment.

3e is better than TV3 for imports I find. Tv3 is fairly useless, it desparately needs a major overhaul.

3e used to get in all the FOX animated shows really quickly but they seem to have given up on that in favour of uploaded and repeats of Take Me Out  they had Community too but stopped showing it after about 6 episodes.

Before that they showed some fantastic British shows back when they were Channel 6. Imo if they focused 3e solely on US and UK imports(not reality shows) they'd do really well from it.

I hope you're not including The Cleaveland Show in that, how that crap got commissioned to series I'll never know. I want to attack the television everytime it comes on.

3e's imports have really decreased over the past 12 months. They've shown The Closer, Cold Case, Without A Trace, CSI on a near loop every week, alongside Friends and Malcolm. All these series are years old.

But the odd thing is that they have yet to show the new series of many shows they have like Modern Family, The Middle, 30 Rock, The US Office, Hart Of Dixie, Mike And Molly, Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show, Bobs Burgers, Bondi Rescue, House amongst more. But instead we have literally the 7th or 8th showing of Blackmarket Ireland and Irelands Crime Capitals.

Daytime is a mess aswell - 2 talk shows, Judge Judy and Ireland AM repeat takes up 7 hours. I think they're completely missing the target market of where 3e should be in.

The badly need to get their HD channel up and running, pointless having a HD studio and not transmitting in HD. I hate watching any sport on it, picture quality is terrible.

    From the article:
Xpose will also be receiving a bit of a shake-up as RTE brings in a similar new show.
The insider said: “Jeff wants the programme to be more edgy and he’s also looking for new presenters for the station as a whole.

It really is needed. I think te show has been around nearly 6 years now, and it has remained the exact same since it has started. It has never hit the Top 20 ratings (which include Judge Judy) so I doubt it's bringing in that many viewers.

Yeah I was wondering why I always stumbled on Cold Case whenever I turned on 3E on the evenings. Anyway your post is bang on the money, an element of laziness in all of it really.

I'm not sure there will be a total departure from reality. This is the guy who brought back Big Brother (under Richard Desmond), though BB is great imo. But apart from that they also had Celevrity Wedding Planner and other such trashy shows

Ireland AM will definitely stay - it's not as if TV3 have much else with which to fill the hours between 7 and 10am.

Midday will more than likely stay too - after all, there are no other ladies-only shows on Irish TV...

They should repeat from the start All Saints and Sunset Beach

As much as Sunset Beach was enjoyable back in 1998, I don't think that's the way forward.
The rubbish though that they replaced Sunset Beach once it finished never did well. Young And The Restless and Bold & The Beautiful.
Don't think they'll be going after Home And Away and Neighbours (as what was described in the article) They've already got 2 main soaps anyway, which is enough.

As mentioned, they'll stick with Ireland AM, as there's no real direct competition from RTE at that tome.

The show with Cybil and Martin needs binning, awful awful stuff.

I didn't mind Midday when Colette Fitzpatrick and Alan Hughes presented it, and it was on serious matters, but the 'Loose Women'-lite format at the moment is appalling television.

Hopefully this is a new beginning for TV3, a complete change of emphasis is needed for the channel away from celebrity trash tv to decent home made programming across a variety of genres. A return to weekend news broadcasting is also a must.

Dowlings no worse than Alan Hughes or Aidan Cooney

It would be nice if this shake-up brought with it a new, bolder logo to replace the cheap and nasty Helvetica 3 that's been used since the beginning of 2009.

While I'm at it, I may as well show the original logo - bold, clear, effective and not associated with Xpose, Midday, Dublin Wives or cheap Irish versions of UK shows:

Oh god I hated that old logo, the new one was grand starting out but as you said its now tained with this celebrity crap... I think they need to focus on - at least what I would do if I took over TV3 tomorrow..

    - Irish programming, Irish drama and the introduction of quality Irish/International historical , natural history, educational and investigative programming.

    - Increasing the quality of their sports portfolio to take key high rating events from RTE - (GAA Championship games, European Championships, World Cup championships, 6 nations rugby, Premier League highlights... etc.)

    - Developing their news output to rival RTE with three main 30/60min news broadcasts (maybe 12:00, 17:00, 23:00) during the week and two during the weekend (maybe 17:00, 22:00) with the construction of a proper news HD studio with the green screen completely phased out very quickly for all programming.

    - The total wipeout of celebrity trash television (Xpose, Celebrity Salon, Talifornia, Dublin Housewives etc.) with a major rebrand of the channels to inform people of the changes.

    - Splitting the two channels, TV3/3e into two completely different channels. TV3 with say 70%+ Irish content along with quality Irish/international drama, series, films and sports. 3e with the emphasis on the current high rating ITV programs with Coronation Street/Emmerdale/Britain's got Talent moving to a new 3e home to create space for TV3 to show Irish programming alongside.

    - The immediate introduction of TV3/3e HD channels.

these are some of my hopes for the TV3 group but none of them will probably ever be implemented :)

Yeah I agree she is a good presenter and could be easily used to front a new "Prime Time" type hard-hitting/investigative/political program on the station, they need to look at what works on RTE and then looking to improve it in their own way.

Hope they are bricking it and this lad goes and finally ends that type of trash television... it hasn't worked nor will it ever work in attracting large Irish television audiences... the money could be then spend on proper Irish programming.

TV3 could do well getting highlights of the Premier League next year and doing a proper job on it. It would almost certainly get a good healthy viewership if they showed it on Saturdays and Sundays. The only problem is where they will squeeze it in with all the X Factor etc during Winter

As I said in post #22, TV3 should move all ITV shows to 3e to cater for different programming on TV3 ... With both channels now being available on all platforms there is no reason not to do it.

If Xpose has to stay then bury it on 3e. Their main channel is no place for it. The current setup for it is ludicrous.

There is no place on any television station for that type of muck... maybe make it into a program like "Off the rails" ... I too despise that too but at least it isn't as cheap and tacky and full of "celebrity gossip" as Xpose.

I agree completely. The celebrity rubbish belongs to the likes of the E! channel

Cannon's job would be relatively safe- I like her film review slot on Ireland AM and she could easily front a 30 minute movie show with previews and interviews.

Aisling O'Loughlin was a decent enough newsreader, she could go back to that but the other two, Gilson and Koster, are useless, absolutely awful presenters

I just can't understand how the people who run TV3 haven't after years of this celebrity tripe understood that it just doesn't work... obviously weekly/annual ratings don't mean much to them because if they read it they would hang their head in shame.... can you imagine being the only fully independent station in Ireland and not having one home-made program in the top 20 in 2012... its actually staggering.

Ha the young fella has an awfully annoying voice, can't listen to him at all. Just out of interest does anyone actually know where TV3 gets their weather information from? ... hardly Met Eireann anyway. They surely just google "Cork weather" and stick either a sun, cloud or a dark cloud from what it says.... Must be the least informative weather of any channel I have ever seen... but I suppose how else are we to know its Aunty Mary's 90th in Castlebar
