I don’t see a thread for this race already

    http://www.clonmelathleticclub.com/#!

Clonmel Half Marathon, Sunday August 18th @ 11:00am. I did this as my first half marathon last year and it must be up there with one of the best value races out there. Really well organised, chip timing, great quality technical t-shirt and a super feed afterwards. All this for €25 if you enter before July 31st. It’s quite a nice course too, a little bit of a drag to start, but then mainly flat except for a couple of very short hills and a nice downhill fast finish.

I’ve just signed up in case there’s a rush after starting this thread ;) Could be a good option for those doing DCM.

That will just be motivation to run faster and finish sooner if it is on the same day :pac:

I'm doing this one this year. It will be my first HM - I'm doing Hal Higdon's Novice HM training at the moment. This is a local race for me so won't have far to hobble home.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭AK333

Did 8 miler LSR this morning - very tough in the heat and the midges!

I'm a bit worried I wont have enough miles in the legs in time for this HM? They better not 'go the extra mile' this year!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭ncmc

I wouldn't use this morning as a measure too much AK, I was out at 7:30 and it was roasting even at that time. Hopefully it won't be that hot on the day.

You've a few weeks to get the mileage up a bit and don't underestimate the extra push you get from the race atmosphere.

As for me, I have zero speed training done so think a pb is very unlikely.

i just signed up for this as the distance and time fits in perfectably with my training plan for DCM, also helps that its a local run me!!

Hi, does anyone know if there are pacers for this race?

There is no information about pacers on the website, but last year there were pacers for 1:30, 1:45, 2 and 2:15 iirc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭dcorcaigh

Early bird entries for this close on the 31st July so enter soon if interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

The club are currently looking to gather 2 pacers for each of the following times, but I don't know how well the search is going:

    90 mins / 1:30
    105 mins / 1:45
    120 mins / 2:00
    135 mins / 2:15

Hmm, entered last year and found it a hard course in comparison to others. Expected it to be flatter :)

Gona try my best to do it again this year though, since its local

Did you do any of the halfs in Waterford Cabaal?

How would Clonmel compare to them?

@ Dukie this is the review of the course on munster running blog, its last years post. http://munsterrunning.blogspot.ie/2012/07/race-noticeclonmel-half-marathon-sun.html

Cheers dcorcaigh, seems like a fair enough course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭Tipp man running

I've run this the last few years and quiet enjoy it....not anywhere as flat as Charleville but not as tough as say Blarney. Long drag for a couple of km to start with but the surface is good and been right at the start it doesn't seem that tough.

After that the course is quiet fast with only a small hill around 5-6 miles, till the 11th mile where there is a killer of a long hill/drag....then a fast mile home.

Well organised club race, good wide road to start, well marshaled, plenty of parking at the start and plenty of grub at the end...would recommend.

I found Waterford easier, maybe I was just having a bad day in Clonmel though :)

I'll find out this year I guess :pac:

Doing my first HM and I'm excited and terrified all at the same time! I just want to finish, before 3 hours and not make a show of myself. Hope you enjoy the bars and cake at the end (my small contribution)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Slow_Runner

After my final run last night before this race have a sore and ridiculously tight soleus muscle:mad:. Hoefully 2 days rest and some rolling will loosen it out, if not may have to give it a miss - was really looking forward to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

Maximum entry has been increased from 500 to 600 runners (t-shirts for 600) so it's looking like a great turnout. Looking forward to it now after a week from hell in work. :)

Plenty of beer afterwards on Sunday.

Didn't see that in the list of 'refreshments' after the HM from Niall

I'll be happy just to be able to walk afterwards!

There's a real buzz in the LIT this afternoon - I have my number.

You'll be grand - don't go out too fast and enjoy crossing the finish line! I was up there myself helping out earlier.
No beer - but a decent goody bag by all accounts.

Looks like it will be very humid indeed...I normally wouldn't bother with water but might be glad of a bit of it to throw over the head.

It's a lovely morning in Clonmel might even need sunblock today!!

Thanks for the tip. Would prefer cool and drizzle though.

Looked like it was going to rain when I was driving to Clonmel but the weather cleared up and sun came,

Found parts of the course pretty windy especially the first three miles or so, same as last year I found the first 1.5miles of the last 3 hard going. I'm just not used to hills.

Finished in 1.39, not a PB but under 1.40 so happy enough as wasn't expecting a PB anyway.

Tec t-shirt seems better then last year quality wise which is good and it's a better colour esp for use in the darker evenings, did hear a few people comment on lack of medal. In no way pushed about medal but it can be nice to have for some people.

Well organised, plenty of parking and plenty of stuff to eat after :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

Hadn't a great day today but the race from an organisation pov went well I think. Had a minor pb but nowhere near what I was hoping for. Tough day at the office but all roads lead to Charleville next month. Need to go and train with the club to kick on I think. Finding it hard running all my miles on my own. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 125 ✭✭Ross Runner

Very tough today in Clonmel! organisation spot on!! course a nightmare!! wind was a killer too,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭AK333

That was tough! My first HM so its a PB but really showed my lack of fitness and miles in my legs - didn't even have the energy for the cuppa afterwards. Last 3 miles were tough and as I was at the back, all the crowd support had gone home for their lunch :-( Great organisation though and I loved the inspirational boards along the way.

Am absolutely buzzing after that, was hoping for 1hr 56, did it in 1hr 53, delighted, that's a PB for me by 12 mins!! DCM training is well on track.

Fantastic run race by Clonmel ac, very very well marshaled and quiet roads once we got off the main road at mile 3. Hill at mile 10 was tough. Some amount of sambos n cakes afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Slow_Runner

+1 on the organisation, well marshalled, mile markers spot on, good spread afterwards and physios on hand. Didn't feel good coming into this as calf was pretty sore (had physio session on Friday night to try and sort it) but went for sub 1:45 and got it with 30 sec to spare:):). Big thanks to the pacers and organisers. Course had some tough hills but some nice down hills as well. Miles 9-11 were tough but once over the last hill was able to pick up the pace. Happy out with the day and a 3 min pb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭Dilbert75

Wind was unfortunate and the course was more testing than I remembered from last year but the organisation was first class, water stations were an example of how to do water stations, road crossings were very well marshalled and the feed at the end was spectacular. And all for half the price of the rock and roll half. I expect to be back again.

I think I was talking to you in the queue for massage afterwards. You work in Little Island and you did Killarney and Cork 1/2 too?

Bad day myself. Did the first 2 miles way too fast and paid for it. School boy error. Time to right the wrongs and get the mojo back.

Finished around 1:45, its not the easiest of courses but it certainly is well very well run.Was going well till around 10 miles but overall pretty happy with the effort I put in.

Great race. Orginization was top notch.

Wouldnt say the course was that bad apart for the final hill which killed me. Had to stop at the 12 mile mark & cost me a sub 1:30 :(

Great value for €25, would definitely recommend

yeah it was that hill knocked the stuffing out of my legs but i rallied for the last mile. i thought the course overall was very good and the hill at start was fine as everyone was bunched together and before i knew it i was over it. Legs are tried today

Actually surprised how much I felt it in the legs this morning, didn't expect to as felt fine yesterday.

Oh well, back to DCM training from today :)

I did this run this year and last year. Support on the course was fantastic this year, plenty of water in bottles which is great. Fantastic marshalling and organisation. Really enjoyable event and will be back next year for sure.

Only downside I felt was the lack of a medal at the end this year, nice to have a memento of the event.

Ya I wasn't having the greatest day at the office myself due to heavy marathon training in the legs and wasn't about to kill myself. Came in on the 1.30 mark and passed one or two walkers on mile 11-12.

I really enjoyed the day and thought it was an excellently organised club race and deserved the good numbers it got.
