Right moved to Cork for 4 months want decent gym to lose bit of flab.

Not pushed on pool, but nice cardio and weights room would be what I'm looking for as well as maybe few spinning and boxing classes not essential.

    Any recommendation?

    Right....a few options....

UCC/Mardyke - great facilities, and will be ok for the summer, but absolutely mobbed at peak times once students are back.

Leeside Leisure/Metropole - have never been in here bar the pool, so can't really say....some offers on membership at the moment through groupon or one of those other sites.

RiversEdge - basic, but cheap as chips....no pool.

Planet in Blackpool - good gym from what I've heard, loads of quality equipment.

Leisureworld in Knocknaheeny or Bishopstown - a little further out but both handy gyms, pools and good selection of gear in gym as well as classes......won't be too expensive either I'd imagine.

Hey guys, I am new here so please bare with me. I too have just recently moved to Cork. I have been trying to find a suitable gym but am finding it difficult. What I am after is a decent leisure center pool etc but also with a good gym with good amount of free weights and a bit of cardio. I so far have looked at "Source" and also "Planet". Could anyone name any other decent options for me or even comment on the two I have mentioned, any comments good or bad about any options would be greatly appreciated. I am based around Cork airport but don't mind travelling a bit because I really enjoy the gym and for a good gym it wouldn't bother me to travel.

The Mardyke, Leisureworld, Jurys Inn and the Kingsley would all have pools. The Mardyke is probably the best of the lot but can get crowded. Especially in the next few months when the students come back.

Thanks very much for the helpful reply cc87. Of the ones you have mentioned which of their gyms would have the best free weights section? Someone had already warned me off the Mardyke for the exact reason you mentioned so appreciate the feedback. Is source and Planet gyms very run down as some people have suggested? I haven't heard of Kingsley so am going to look at them now. Appreciate any other suggestions too, I was living in Dublin so still adjusting to the change so any info at all is greatly appreciated.

No idea about source or planet, haven't been near them.

Leisureworld has a decent free weight section but can be crowded as well.

The Kingsley is alright but its very pricey for whats offered.

Might be worth looking at gyms without pools and then getting a pool only membership somewhere

Yeah not a bad idea cc87. No pool would not be a deal breaker but just found some of the gyms I have looked at that weren't attached to a hotel or pool to be very small, one thing I wouldn't like is a small packed gym. Thanks again for the insight. Anyone else have a gym they would recommend??

Mardyke is the best gym. College starting soon though. From September - November you can forget about it though if your there anytime from 10am -10pm , place will be packed with newbie students lookin to pump their bicep muscles (or lack of) so they can fill that XS Hollister t shirt for havannas on a tuesday night.

It tends to be okay though after november -ish , i suppose the students get sick of it after the novelty of the first couple months wears off. Top class facilities, changing rooms etc.

Thanks for your input Arnold much appreciated. Have you any experience of any of the gyms I have mentioned above or any of your own which you would recommend? I really wouldn't be into a gym packed full of people, students or anybody for that matter. Dont get me wrong a busy gym can have a good atmosphere but when all your exercises are being interrupted waiting for machines or weights etc it can get frustrating!! Be great to hear any other suggestions.
