Was with my doctor yesterday and it seems likely that I may possibly have haemochromatosis. No biggie, easily managed or so Im told. Thing is she's put me on a very restricted diet of only 500 calories a day. Seemingly my weight is a big factor in this, I'm almost 24st. I've been given max carbs of 60g per day, max fat of 20g per day and need to take a fibre and protein supplement also. I thought that healthy weight loss was in the region of 1-2lbs per week. What is my expected rate of weight loss if I have to stick to these conditions given that recommended calorie intake is about the 2500 mark daily???

To me that advice seems a bit whacky tbh.

Your problem is that you absorb too much iron so diet-wise focusing on eating foods low in iron, in conjunction with eating things that may help inhibit its absorption is prob the way to go. Things that are high in phytic acid will do this (nuts and legumes for example). Coffee with iron-containing meals may also help.

    Are you male or female?

Regular blood donation will also help with iron overload.

Please note that I am NOT a medical doctor...

If I were you I'd seriously consider finding a registered dietitian to discuss your condition with. Your doc's advice doesn't make all that much sense to me.

    Hope you get sorted.
