Did you ever try smoking a cigarette?
The first time I ever smoked was when I was about 16 and I didn't really see what the big deal was. I don't really smoke now just the odd one on a night out so you could say I am a social smoker.
So, what are ye experiences with smoking?

Yeah, when I about fourteen or so, couple times since.
I kind of see why people are addicted, there's a nice little buzz going. Not enough of a one to counterbalance the disadvantages imo however.

13 made me sick but thought it was so cool kept doing it for 17 odd year then stopped for 5 years back on for 1 then off since. 9 years now still think of them and times so tempted.

Social smokers make my blood boil. If you can go without them most of the time you can go without them all the time. I was a heavy smoker when I was young, upwards of 40 a day, weaned myself down to five or so a day for the last few years, haven't smoked in two weeks now.

And I hated every single ****ing cigarette I ever smoked.

Give them up youngfella, or I'll come round your house and batter you.

Why smoke at all if you only need the odd one on a night out? I tried a few when I was about ten years old but didn't have the money to buy them. My friend who smoked with me had a bit more cash and he died young, possible because of the smoking.

The fisheries board and the anti smoking lobby are teaming up on their next marketing campaign to save money. The slogan is 'smoked fish, not cigarettes'

My first time trying a cigarette, I was 5. Stole one from my folks when they were asleep.

    Tried again at 7.

Started smoking at 11 or 12.

My younger sister started at 10, my mum started at 10 and my dad started at 8, so I suppose it kind of runs in the family. :pac:

Myself and the father are off cigarettes now, though. :)

I smoked for 12 years. I tried a few times to give them up unsuccessfully. Then I tried cold turkey and never smoked since. I never even had a craving for them since giving up. No point in giving up for financial reasons. I gave them up because i hated them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

Yep, started when I was 9 up till about 15. Then back on again from about 18 to 20. Gave them up and never looked back since :)

:pac: It's not his fault you're a weak, weak person with no concept of the word moderation when it comes to cigarettes. What if he likes the occasional cigarette? What's wrong with that? Apart from the fact that it might kill you of course :).

I nicked a few cigarettes growing up from my mom. I bought my own at 14 and was a full fledged smoker by 16. I quit cold turkey as a New Year's resolution and it's been great. I hated EVERYTHING about smoking: the smell; having to freeze my balls off just to light up; the dizzy spells from smoking in the heat; the rude untimely cravings; the copious amounts of tea and coffee I drank because they went well with the cigarettes and the fact that I couldn't do any sort of exercise without feeling like my lungs were on fire. It's such a relief to be done with it.

    They're fierce moreish. The bastards.
Was off them for 4 months, but I'm pretty much back on them (though not as much as before).
Gonna try quit again from the 1st of July.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭Bozo Skeleton

I gave them up for a while years ago. I decided it was only ok to smoke while I was having a drink or smoking a joint. I was drunk and stoned for a month, but hey, I was off the fags.

so you dont really see what the big deal is with them, yet you smoke the odd one. great

Totally agree,You forgot to mention they try scab fags off you all night when they're out to which now I simply reply buy your fcking own. I don't mind giving someone a smoke but to go out with the intention of scabbing all night is totally wrong

There's only one one thing worse than smoking... former smokers who can't wait to tell you you should 'quit and be like me because I'm wonderful and you're a moron'.

If ever any person should STFU it's reformed former addicts and who get preachy.

When the pro's and cons are weighed up, cigarettes are the crappest drug I've ever taken.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,390 ✭✭✭IM0

I did, probably around 10 or something? got light headed, felt sick, because I smoked properly straight off by inhaling

that cured me, hung around while we did it as a group 'up the back lane' maybe tried it once or twice more, but that was it. logic kicked in "why am I doing something which is **** and makes me feel sick to look cool?" so stopped and never touched one since. maybe it was something as simple as the girl I fancied at the time not doing it too no idea cant remember, but that might have been a factor too but like I say no idea.

It should actually be put in the constitution at this stage about it so that it will be taught in schools from a VERY early age [8?] and the realities of what it WILL do to your body, there is absolutely no reason for it, none whatsoever that is legal anyway. and anyone who says its good for stress, yeah because youre addicted, and taking one satisfies the addiction nothing else and so relives the stress OF ADDICTON!! duh..

Na, it's more a case of quit or you'll end up as a moron like me. I don't feel wonderful for giving up smoking, I feel like **** for ever starting the stupid effing things. And when I see a social smoker, who is not addicted and just smoking to be 'cool', it angers me Cathal, it angers me quite a bit.:(

whats wrong with me "social". I smoke maybe once a month, maybe even less and I have done for over 4 years now. Mostly on my own in my room, but the occasional time I do go out I'll go through 3 or 4.

I've never became more addicted than this. I dont buy more than 3 packs a year.

Not every becomes addicted you know.

I hated myself for smoking too. In fact it's how I got away from their grip.
I don't feel wonderful for giving up smoking, I feel like **** for ever starting the stupid effing things.

It's really easy to get addicted to a bad thing but very difficult to give it up.. especially when you're young and full of brvado. I hated cigs as a young teen. Four of us young'uns used to hang around together and three of them bought a 10 pack of cigs. They used to take 3 cigs each and give me the 4th because it wasn't worth splitting.

I smoked it to feel like I belonged to the group and, wouldn't you know, was eventually buying into the whole thing. My goodness was I ever addicted to those fucking things when I quit several years ago.. (ached for them).
And when I see a social smoker, who is not addicted and just smoking to be 'cool', it angers me Cathal, it angers me quite a bit.:(

Me too TBM. I hate the bloody things too. I hate them because they're so damn addictive. Everyone in my Family smoked (7) except my Mother.. none of us do now only for my Dad who smokes a pipe. The thing is though smokers don't like to be reminded of how stupid smoking is - it hurts - and when people get hurt they get defensive.

Good on you my friend. You keep enjoying your smokes and don't forget to leave me a few quid in your will.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,331 ✭✭✭Ilyana 2.0

I'd have the very odd cigarette if I'm on a night out, if I was offered one. I never ask for them, I don't buy them and I'm not addicted. It's enjoyable at the time but I hate the stink on my hands and in my hair the next day. Also, the cost is insane.

My parents and all my grandparents smoke(d), as do many of my friends and colleagues. Seeing them struggle with the addiction is enough to put me off smoking more frequently, because I'd be scared that I'd get hooked too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,581 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Smoked 20 a day from 17 to about 22. Now smoke about 10 a year, if even. Only when drunk but I'll buy my own, I remember how annoying it was being begged for them.

Was tetchy for about three days max when I gave up regularly - no idea how it can be so bad for some people but clearly it is.

If I could find a way to get the smell of currently burning Bensons and not the smell of them three minutes later, I'd pay good money for it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭caustic 1

Love the smell of ciggies, always have even as child.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,204 ✭✭✭FoxT

I try to smoke, and, unfortunately, succeed, about twenty times a day.
I would not recommend it. Smoking is expensive, very difficult to halt, and harms you physically.

I quit 3-4 times a year. One day, I will win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

I'd have the odd social smoke on a night out but honestly it'd never be more than 10 cigarettes a year. I'd hate to be a 10-a-day smoker though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,573 ✭✭✭pragmatic1

I'm a heavy smoker and regret the day I started. If you're not addicted to them now, stop before you do become addicted. Taking up smoking is the singular dumbest thing I've ever done in my life and I've done a lot of stupid things over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 galway_dude24

Started at the age of about 13... stole a couple of a neighbour... Bought a couple of packs... got hooked on them... parents found a load of empty boxes in my room at 16... stopped for a week or so and back on them since, eight years on unknown to the folks!
    :-/
