I've a friend who is a journalist. send me a pm and let me know if you want to talk to them.

Yeah, it would totally depend on the scope of the story. Is it government related? Something related to a celebrity? A corporate cover-up? Or, they found out that their auntie is sleeping with the postman?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

Obviously they're blowing the whistle because of the moral outrage they feel about whatever is going on that needs the whistle blown on it.

Having said that, they should definitely go to whatever media outlet will pay them loads of moolah.

I wouldn't go to any paper if I were in that situation. Post it online to a blog, or even here if there's proof to back the claims up.

Irish newspapers are utterly crap and partial.. they'd most likely add their own slant to any story presented to them.

If it's a genuine whistleblowing, contact Broadsheet.ie.. I'm sure they'd be interested in it.

He needs an investigating journalist someone that will dig a little deeper.

So whats this "big" issue then eh?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭genericguy

If he's not in it for the money do it here. It'd be common knowledge in five mins flat. Either way make sure he knows he needs evidence to avoid defamation claims.

I disagree, you could get a nice variation of opinions which would matter in todays world.

Very important for our type of debating.

Nah it needs to be in the mainstream media for the attention it will get.

The official authority to report it to, presuming its a situation like that. Any other way will just result in it coming back to slap him in the face.

eh... who's the audience? Why tell someone in England about something happening Ireland, that doesn't affect England?

Unless of course its to do with all the tax money they are chasing down.

They might not have an agenda.

If the OP could divulge even the type of case which the whistle blowing would fall under then people could help more. If it is Gardaí related then John Mooney of the Sunday Times has shown himself to be a courageous journalist, if it is finance related then it would be no harm to get into contact with someone like Jonathan Sugarman. Unfortunately Namawinelake is no more.

The Irish media have plenty of form for burying stories.

    Is your friend hot?

Then again bit of a weird song. Watch it again on mute with this commentary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,324 ✭✭✭BillyMitchel

The journal would be great, think of all the green thumbs and dumbass comments.

OP my auntie is a well known public representative and former freelance journalist and her husband a well known radio presenter too, I've all the contacts. Give us some idea of the story. Political/Celeb etc etc.. If its a photo of a guard smoking a spliff or something stupid then it be worthless. Now if it's a big story and you have photo evidence of someone important doing something they shouldn't and don't give a crap who gets the story, then your friend could become an extremely wealthy man over night.

PM if you like or talk to Frank. ;)

Seriously, if your friends future personal or career safety will be at risk, make sure he blows the whistle anonymously and carefully, using encrypted email, going through a couple of encrypted VPN's + Tor or something (I'm really not an expert on that, best research it well online first); I would also say, best not bother with any Irish newspapers.

Don't post any 'hints' or anything on boards either, because if there is anything that can implicate you as knowing about it, a court order to get your IP from boards and your name/address from your ISP, can be gotten in no time, so you can be questioned about your 'friend'.

The Guardian have a pretty good track record insofar as whistleblowers (with Glenn Greenwald there being the guy Snowden blew the whistle to), so they would be a good bet; they do reporting on Ireland specifically in some cases, but not a huge amount.
