Great fun listening to liveline about some 49 year old woman who was "semi nude" for about 15 sec in transition in Westport and got a DQ.

Its whingfest, all the prudes who would normally give out about young ones go around half naked are fine with people being naked in transition:rolleyes:

Its annoying when people don't know the rules and expect them to be bent to suit poor old them.

Agreed and its even funnier when its the prudes on liveline standing up people being nude.

If you don't know the rules, don't do the event !

They were complaining about the prudes who made the rule that a woman's chest is considered to be "indecent exposure." That's ridiculous.

Plus she wasn't naked. Her towel dropped, briefly leaving her topless.

    Which isn't allowed.............

I think you missed the point of the discussion. The rules do not state that being topless is against the rules.

Rather, it led to an interesting discussion that revealed that one official considered a woman's chest as "indecent exposure" under the rules.

Which then led to people asking what is considered indecent exposure in this day and age. I don't know anyone who would consider the lady's example as anything remotely "indecent."

It was far from a whingefest, let alone one driven by prudes.

No i think they missed the point that being nude or indecent exposure is not allowed, simple as.

Is a guy with his top covered and his penis in view indecent exposure ? Yes

Is a woman with her breasts on view in transition indecent expsoure ?
    Yes

It is mentioned in every race briefing i've heard so theres no excuses for it.

By you reasoning any woman can walk around all day anywhere in Ireland topless.........can she ? I think the answer you'll find is NO.

If you don't like the rules don't take part in the event. Also she said a marshall waived a red card at her.......no marshall has a red card at an event, i think you'll find that was the race ref.

I think the most shocking thing in all of this is....

how much time she must have wasted in transition while changing

They were calling a tri suit a "super suit" if i remember correctly.

Is it the TI official that would issue the red card?

The more I think about it the funnier this gets, tbh.

The same biddies on liveline today would be Outraged, Joe, OUTRAGED! if bare nipples were even mentioned, let alone exposed anywhere else. But when its because they are doing something amazing and really hard and stuff, well, then it should just be allowed!

The annoying bit though, is that the same people that complain about this are probably going to complain that the tri was too hard, or too cold, or too dangerous for them, and should be made easier so they can do it.

TI rulings being debated on Joe Duffy?

We've finally hit the big time.

Next week Joe discusses drafting enforcement...

    Yes !

Pity to hear westport getting the bad press and not Ti considering the quality of the event they ran.

The upper torso nudity thing applies to men as well, so they cant even claim sexism.

So, when are we placing the boards group order for them supersuits???

Isn't that why the zip was moved to the back of the suits becuase it was seen that men have an advantage in being able to pull the zip down and aid cooling the body ?

A front zip cant be open below nipple height on either gender.

From TI Manual of guidance: (the bit that got her in trouble)
    Nudity
is unacceptable at any time and competitors are expected to observe a high standard of
decorum. Regardless of which type of kit is worn, the uniform must be attached at both
shoulders for the duration of the event. The torso must remain covered with front zips
being undone no lower than a horizontal line running between the nipples.

Bare chest applies to men alright... but not in transition? We need IM style modesty tents here :)

Been in some mixed sex tents at IMs for T1.

Nothing like some totally naked hot birds to make you forget about your bad swim time.

And why should Ti get bad press. What did they do wrong.

I'm sure Westport run a very good event and the best of luck to them.

But the technical official making sure the rules are applied. That's it the sport is ruined. Next they will be trying to make sure the water temperature/condidions are Ok.

    Oh wait. .....

The rules are a joke! A bit of a wardrobe malfunction gets a DQ when something like this is not only allowed, but actually encouraged:

Maybe allowed under WTC but not ITU. So I wouldn't go as far as to say encouraged.

On a side note. Always taught he came straight out of a 80's porn movie. (Not that I seen any).
Have to say I change my mind after I met him. Really nice guy

    As for wardrobe malfunction.

She quote "took down her one piece swim suit" ... malfunction hhuummm

The guy who got dq in Athy only took down his one piece swim suit was that a malfunction.

She also had the right to an appeal on the day. that maybe she could have took up.

Sorry, didn't mean that ti deserved bad press, Just that they would be much better placed to answer questions on their rules than the event organizers.

I have no issue with the rule one way or the other.

Is it the TI official that would issue the red card?

It was indeed a TI official that issue the DQ, Joe Duffy made it out that it was a Westport Triathlon Marshal. Disappointingly Triathlon Ireland they will not respond to the Media on this issue.

I don't know if it was the same Joe. Duffy show that I was listing to but was it not the lady in question who said it was a marshal who gave her the red card.

Maybe if she knew the rules she would know that only the TI technical Official could give her a red card.

And why would /should TI talk to the media about it.

I see the press are trying to make a big thing out if it. With the" grueling" event. "Poor" woman.

If she went to the bridge club, hurling club, basketball club etc you play be the rules
If you don't like the rules or dont want to play by them well then don't play the game.

(Serious question so I don't get DQed next time). So let me get this straight, I did a Tri Sprint a few weeks back. I'm a beginner who borrowed a wet suit and wore a pair of lycra togs underneath. I got to T1 pulled down the wet suit and put a cycling top on. Exposing both nipples for a short amount of time, then stripped off the rest of the wet suit. I'm a bloke (sorry lads for ruining the Monday buzz). So what you are telling me is that I should have been DQed for this and in future I have to wear a vest or a tri suit underneath the wetsuit?

There is some confusion here... I believe men can be topless in transition but not on the course.

Torso must be covered at all times.

Didn't one of the lead men in Valentia get a one minute penalty for being topless on the run? If so why the difference in punishment topless man 1min / topless woman DQ ? (if no distinction made in the rules between genders)

I know the argument is that the rules are the rules, but am I the only one that thinks the statement

The FFTRI seem to be trying to clean up the sport as well, from 5150 Marseilles:
Yellow card: Urinating from the bike or in transition zones outside of the Dixi toilets

apparently.., she says she saw other male competitors with bare chests and 1 with a bare arse.. so its more the inequality of the thing thats out of order.. rules are rules..thats grand..should apply to everone though.. t.i. referee shouldve dq'ed all of them or none of them..

Rules are rules but I would be aghast if I saw some TI Official brandishing a red card to me if changing my t-shirt, although women are being discriminated here as female breasts would be considered naughty bits

I assume this rule is then different for pool based triathlons when many male competitors would be swimming bare-chested in lyrca running shorts, are they going to force beginners to buy eye watering expensive tri suits for one race?

My two cents if I was that TI Official - I would have conveniently pretended I didn't see said breasts. They are well able to turn a blind eye to drafting
