Hi guys, In the hunt for a new car, 1000-6,000 euro is the budget. Engine no bigger than 1.6 L . I do around 350 KM a week. . I have my full six months. I don't necessarily have to spend 6k and don't care about the year of the car as long as its driving good and is in good nick and will not break down on me for a few years. If I could this for 1k even better.

Well any really any car with a bit of power say 1.4L or 1.6L, that's reasonably priced within budget and are known not to give any issues.
I don't necessairly have to spend the six. Year of a car doesn't really bother me tbh

    Mazda 3 1.6?

Has anything stood out for you at all?

I like the look of these three. Mondeo's, Passats, Octavias. BMWS as well but I heard the older ones give a lot of trouble.

    Your range is from 1-6k??
Figure out what you need the car for, what type of car you prefer(saloon, hatchback etc). Petrol or diesel? How long you intend keeping it.
Have a look on donedeal for ideas and then come back for advice.
Theres any amount of it here abouts, but they're not psychics. Some info helps:cool:

1.4 or 1.6 doesnt necessarily equal power. You can get a 1.2 that feels more powerful than a 1.6, depending on many factors, namely the weight of the car. Do you have preferences? Size of car, style? Anything that could help. Im selling a a classic mini within your budget, but thats not a car to suit most people.

Such vague requirements, requires a vague answer.

    Get a 1-6k Toyota/VW/Audi/Honda/Mazda that has a 1.4 or 1.6 litre engine.

2 of those don't have 1.6's, the Passat is underpowered and drinks juice and the 1.4 Octavia is shyte.

Please see my above post about Mondeo's, Octavia, Passat, BMW and acutally I like the look of a Vectra. What are these like?

Older astras suffer HGF and that model Vectra was poor at best.

The later 1.6 petrol drinks juice too

What are the Avensis like? They seem resonably priced http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Avensis/1.6-AURA/34713656969109800/advert?channel=CARS

Fine at what they do. Most here have a basic spec and are bland. Underpowered though in 1.6 form.

OP you are looking for advice so may I give you the best piece I can: figure out what you want and how much you want to spend.

So far you've said you want a max 1.6 and then said a Mondeo and BMW.

You say you want something good to drive then talk about Octavias and Avensis.

If you want a cheap, new, well specced car may I suggest a 07 Laguna. That way we pretty much have all that segment of cars covered.

i have an avensis - it is solid comfortable and reliable. 3-4K will get you something fairly decent (petrol) diesels are a bit more.

I had the astra, as did a couple of people and i had not heard of any head gasket issues. The old man had the vectra and it was a great car. But every car type has demons

I've really no clue of cars at all. I drive a punto at present  and is giving trouble.
so looking for something around the 1.4 or 1.6L that is reliable, quick enough and that doesn't give trouble. I will just leave the budget at 6k because the way I have it from 1k to 6k is just stupid. I don't necessarily need to spend the 6k if I can get something two or three years older for half the price if you get me.

What age are you? I'm thinking of insurance here.

Something like a Laguna 1.6 from about 06/07 will give you a lot of flash for your cash and be cheap to insure. More reliable than people will lead you to believe too.

Most 1.4's in Golfs and Focus are underpowered and no cheaper to run than the 1.6's so I wouldn't bother.

A basic rule I have is that a big car with a small engine is generally under powered. Now this has changed recently with more complex small engine but within your budget it might be hard to find a decent car with a small engine

Does the physical size of the car matter? Is it just you thats in it or are you carting around kids etc, that you would need a 4 door saloon with a sizeable boot? No point in buying a big 4 door saloon with a 1.4/1.6 and using that little power carrying around excess car.

I'm 25 no kids just an annoying missus. I think another poster was saying what age I was insurance wise but I have three year no claims bonus as a named driver which is bringing down my insurance by nearly half!

Others will say they are rubbish but the later ones were reasonably sorted.

As said they are flash for the car.

Would you consider another Punto with the 1.4l 16 valve engine from about 06/07?

What about a Corolla, the 03-06 1.4's are pretty solid and comfortable, they are about the same as most of their competitors on juicel, 350km's a week is petrol territory anyway so I wouldn't be looking at diesels.

I'm torn between the modeo, Avensis, Laguna and Vectra now. Laguna probably be the easiest on petrol?

I always find Toyota to be the lightest on petrol. A friend always swore his Laguna II 1.6 got over 40mpg but I can't say for definite.

Tbh they will all be pretty dead to drive and no great shakes. The Avensis and Laguna are definite underpowered, the Mondeo in 1.6 form is under powered and I never got more than 37 mpg out of our one. For balance I can get 44mpg out of a 2.0l BMW.

The Vectra is just as bag mpg as the Mondeo.

With the Laguna you'll get a newer one cheap with lots of toys but you will find it hard to sell on and there is the potential for electrical niggles.

So what would people say if you had to pick one 1.4L and one 1.6L what would ye pick. Ever car I see everone seems to have a problem with it.7

Would I be better off with a BMW and spend an extra 500 or 600 on insurance for a BMW

No matter what you pick someone will have an issue with it :)

I've had two VWs and both were terrible, I loved my old Avensis, I hated my Clio and everyone else thinks my BMW is underpowered and all wrong as its a 4 cylinder but it brings a smile to my face.

Go and drive a few cars and figure out what you want. As said a Punto is a nice car if you buy the right one. Lots of the cars you want are either big or underpowered. You yourself say you only ever have two people in the car.

on my avensis i get 39mpg but use an additive in the car which saves petrol and have a very light right foot.

Fwiw those additives are a waste of money IMHO

55litre tank I think which would make that pretty good.

On a bad day I'll get 400 from a tank and on a good (boring) day ill get 550.

All depends how and where I drive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

60L tank. Normally takes about 51/52L when i fill her up. This works out at about 43mpg. If getting this makes you sick you must have a delicate stomach.

thats crazy. i have a fairly small tank . can never get more than 52 litres in even when stating o km left. i get just over 1,100 km from 52 litres and thats in a 2.0tdi so 400 miles is pretty miserable imo

im expressing km because thats whats relevant now. easy to convert for you to understand. clearly stated tdi which means diesel . point being your mpg is pretty poor.

    Ok.....

Km is only relevant when comparing like for like, which you weren't.

Clearly stated TDI after you were asked so a bit late like.

And how anyone can say 44mpg from a two litre petrol is bad is off their rocker.

You're not comparing like for like.

It's like saying an S-Class Merc is better than a Clio.

    You're talking rubbish :)

OP has asked about 1.4/6 Petrol cars not 2.0TDIs.

With all due respect I've tried to help OP. I've yet to see a useful post from you other than the one about OP not knowing what they want.

km is what is used now to the best of my knowledge

i clearly stated in the post it was a tdi

i thought op asked about 1.4/1.6 so why are you quoting a 2.0 petrol at 44mpg

calm down and read posts fully.

if you cant compare km and mph thats not my problem .

    I will dear.

OP mentioned BMWs btw and as I've had experience of almost all the cars OP mentioned I gave my two cents.

As OP was talking about petrol a I see no relevance to your diesel MPGs.

Btw everyone was talking about MPG so I assumed it was not KMs we were talking about. At this point I refer you to the piece of your post I quoted.
