Ban Baiting

A recent post has prompted me to wonder about the existence of ban baiters. That is the idiot replies designed to wind you up and everyone else until you snap and say something supposedly hurtful. The moderator then gives you a ban and the baiter gets a laugh.

Oh it happens alot on here :pac:

One thing I noticed on boards is that for example you can't call someone a fucking idiot - fair enough thats rude - But there are ways around this such as calling some "a complete and utter moron" but you won't get banned for that. But same meaning. So some people take advantage of that.

They'll insult you and they'll rise you with the above. Hoping you'll take the bait and tell them to fuck off - then in comes a mod with "personal abuse" and the other person in question "thanks" the mod's post whilst jerking off.

Reality is, just like in the real world, there are alot of ****-stirrers. Who love nothing better than to rise people.

I consider myself to be a 'ban avoider', that is, someone who doesn't take anything said on the internet seriously enough to say something I regret.

But there are ways around this such as calling some "a complete and utter moron" but you won't get banned for that.

I'm pretty sure you'd get infracted/banned for that too.

If you think someone's on the wind-up, report the post and say so. It's the only way the mods can notice it.

The best way to get around it is to call their post idiotic. Whenever I call someone's post idiotic or (better still) imbecilic, it's probably quite obvious that I'm only doing so because the rules preclude me from calling them an idiot.

They hide them cunningly under the heading "Infractions".

Click on your own name and it'll bring you to your profile. There'll be an "infractions" tab there. Click that and you'll see your infractions/bans.

Cheers man, had a nose... I don't have one of those tabs.

This is the same tab next to visitors ,friends, stats etc

If so. I must be a very good boy here on boards!

If you get an infraction or a ban, you'll get a pm about it so it won't come as a surprise!

I agree completely, I think such behaviour here is despicable. The only problem is, like masterbaiting, poster baiting is one of those lesser openly talked about subjects. Perhaps boards can form a committee to discuss and draft a code. :)

It sometimes amazes me how people get sucked in so easily. most of the time, the poster being trolled knows full well they are being trolled but still react.

    Trolls love posters like that.

And yet mods still give infractions to people who respond to trolls. No sympathy eh?

But what if you didn't know they were a Troll?? My Troldar is broken - the lad from Tectatroll can't come till next wednesday. I shall have to tread warily. Jasus. What if you're trolling??? This is getting complicated..

That Troll-ease has been used on a travveler thread -it's gone off the scale and gotten stuck. The Tectatroll is travveler thread proof to 10,000 posts. And it runs on LPG with the optional conversion kit. Sadly, reliability suffers.

Thanks for that extremely useful post. Now, why don't you inform us of some more of your incredibly intelligent opinions?

They'll insult you and they'll rise you with the above.

That is something I have never understood personally though. I have had all kinds of insults thrown at me on line. Especially related to my relationship which is somewhat not ordinary. On this site and many others. The people doing so have tried to insult me - my partners - my parents - my daughter - and worse.

And not once ever have I risen to it or felt offended by it. The reason being that these opinions and insults are coming from people who's opinion I do not yet repsect and until I respect them or their opinions nothing they say can offend me. In fact there is a user going around boards.ie with a motto on this - along the lines of the only person demeaned by insults is the person using them.

So I guess I just do not understand how people become invested in the opinions of faceless unknown people enough TO be "Ban Baited" in this fashion. Is it a personal insecurity thing that allows people to see in the words of others failings they already see in themselves so they lash out at the other? Or is there some other root to it?

Or am I just emotionally dead inside and that is the reason I am impervious to the insults of others? Or some other failing on my part?

Rats only come looking for food where there is food - upon finding none they leave. If people come on forums looking for a reaction - the only reason they come is people give them that reaction.

After a certain amount of time posting online (especially debates), you become pretty much impervious to trolling (though tbh, some things still can rile you up out of offensiveness); there are so many hard to distinguish kinds of it though.

One big one, is where posters in a discussion discard with any attempts at logical argument (they'll still keep up the pretense of it though), and ratchet up the condescension/ridicule, combined with deep amounts of fallacious argument/ill-logic to obfuscate the real issues under discussion, so they can then try to both 'win' an argument on social impressions (usually combined with other posters doing the same), and as a bonus, to get a rise out of other posters (maybe even with them getting banned).

I don't actually think that is 'trolling' when the posters actually believe (or support the end goals of the belief, without believing themselves) what they are saying/supporting though, it is kind of ambiguous; it's the difference between trying to purely get a rise out of someone (trolling), and trying to push their view despite knowing it won't hold up to logical argument (not trolling - maybe shilling, or something more insidious).

Trolls and obvious shills are relatively harmless; these types though (where guides to fallacious/dishonest argument are not for spotting it, but are used as instructions), are a lot more insidious/offensive, because they try to fool people in a much deeper way (a bit like a religion or cult), and to control/muddy discussion of certain topics.

That's far more harmful/corrupt than any regular troll can be; trolls are just a bit of fun in comparison.
