I'm in Poland currently, but this has happened to me in Ireland as well, so if you wish, read on.

I was going behind a guy on a scooter. He was doing 50kph in a 70kph zone. I decided to overtake and this asshole:mad: speeds up!! I barely made it before having a head-on collision with the car that was oncoming and I was doing 140kph, because this douchebag speeded up so much! This has also happened to me in Ireland, but it was a BMW driver :mad:

All you had to do was pull in early. You'd have heard a slight thud against the door, but you would have seen no more idiot moped driver. :D

Sometimes you have to know when to give up. I can't see how you ended up at 140kmph from 50kmph without it occurring to you that maybe it wasnt a great idea. Are we talking a really powerful scooter?

The guy on the moped is an idiot.
The oncoming driver is completely innocent.
The guy in the big estate who nearly has a head on collision doing 140 in a 70 zone? I'll let you be the judge of that.

Sounds like the scooter doubled his speed in the length it took you to get beside him.

Where do we find these scooters?

How did you feel the need to accellerate to 140 to pass a scooter? Are you sure it was a scooter.

You obviously did an inappropriate overtaking move considering you had to accellerate to twice the speed limit to complete the overtake.

How's the saving for the M5 going?

And he should have had plenty of time to decide to back off!

I don't know Polish roads but I'm assuming it's 70kph either because it's urban (peds in danger) or because it's a rural road with limited sight lines or lots of junctions. I like speed; I think 200 kph is an acceptable cruising speed on a motorway. However, he was doing 70kph in excess of the limit on the wrong side of the road and this is the key factor for me; a reasonable estimate of closing speed being 210kph with (likely) limited run off areas. I stand by reckless, others might say suicidal.

I couldn't stop at that stage, because the car that was behind me, was already in my place, and possibly wouldn't let me in. I had plenty of room when I started to overtake. When the car was closing in, I noticed I still didn't pass this scooter (125cc judging by the size) completely. I admit I have panicked a bit, and just wanted to pass this guy as soon as possible. Still, he shouldn't have accelerated that much when I started to overtake him. I immediately slowed down of course. I like to drive fast, but 140kph on that road would be complete lunacy.

The road was quite wide, so the guy driving on the other side wouldn't have a problem making some room. Remember, it's all seconds.

So you're going 50 and try to overtake in a 70. If I got to 90-100kph to no avail I definitely would have backed off. Going up to 140 was unnecessary.

Never would I go 200kph in a 100kph zone while on the wrong side of the road with what you describe as free flowing busy traffic.

    Takes two to tango.

    According to wiki

"limits of 70 km/h or higher can be found on urban expressway"

but I've never driven in Poland so this is armchair research.

Having acknowledged that, can't you see that 140kph on the wrong side is beyond "complete lunacy". I'm not trying to hound you but you need to reflect on this, slowing down and trying to regain your past place would ave been much safer and unless the person who "took your place" was keeping up with the 130kph scooter, it would have been very possible. If this happens again, you may very well not have the same outcome.

It's an out-of-urban-zone road, where town ends. It's 70kph limit there unless the sign says differently.

I would agree with the OP and say to all you people that are calling him a lunatic that it happens in seconds.
If you go to pass someone, you make the decision and make the move. Backingout or changing your mind mid manoeuvre can be very dangerous.
It has happened to me and all I can say is that there would have been a cold day in hell before I would have backed out of the manoeuvre.
It’s one of the most dangerous things that has ever happened me on Irish roads actually.
Happened up around Monaghan years ago. Inconsistent speeds by the car infront and I went to pass on a long straight. It took every little bit of puff from my car to get past before the next bend at which time I was doing well over 90mph!
I met her in a garage up the road and let her have it.
I told her that she nearly killed us and that she accelerated up to 90+ mph before I got past.
She just said "oh yeah? Well you just hit the brakes when you passed us!"
    "Fcuk off you bully"
I went silent - I didn't even know what to say to her at this stage.
Mrs Cadaliac had to put me back in the car.

I hope that bitch is reading this now.

Did it occur to you at any stage since, that most cars' abilities to decelerate at that speed, far exceed their ability to accelerate? You admit yourself that your car at the time was on the limit. If you genuinely wanted to get back in safely without putting oncoming traffic at risk, the only sensible option is to brake and get back in. I doubt if any traffic behind you had decided to accelerate up to 90mph so you would have had room. Was stubbornness a factor of your decision making at the time?

Tbh I've gotten involved in this type of carry on and it is complete stupidity on the person being overtaken IMO.
Happened to me, on a motorway though so safer however same logic applies.
Guy in front was doing about 100, flicked on the indicator and pulled out and sped up to 130ish. This smart lad decides he aint havin it and the moment I start to get ready to pull in he floors it (undertaking me) and then stays a fingers length in front. This pissed me off no end so I floored it too and what ensued was about 2mins of a battle of the bolloxes.
He was slamming on his brakes the moment I would be behind him etc. Got to the tolls and I got out of the car and ran to his window - off like a scolded cat.
I let my pride get in the way with that one in the sense I wasnt backing down and tbh I dont think I would now either. Tossers those kind of people

    Guilty, me too.
That was my point though. Its very hard not to behave like a pr1ck when the ass hat on the inside starts to accelerate as hard as they can.
@ josip - do you think I am a comoplete fool or what? I never mentioned anything about on-coming traffic and I know how cars behave at those speeds.

Happened before on a motorway to me... sort of. Lads in front not doing the limit, went to accelerate, noticed I had to go maybe 20 over to match them, thought I was being a bit silly and pulled back in. Slowed down, no I'm definitely not being slow here they're doing a good bit under the limit, pull out again... once again they speed up. I gave up and they eventually sped up properly in front of me and disappeared
Didn't get to overtake but I did get what I wanted which was them to get out of the way so it worked out for me in the end... without anything dangerous going on

I don't know what's wrong with these people though
Doing it for a laugh on a motorway is daft enough but actively trying to kill people on the road because they think everything is a personal affront - wtf

I was merely observing that you were slating (and quite rightly) a lady who drove recklessly but then go on to tell us how you drove recklessly.

I don't think there is anything high horse about it. I've done stupid stuff in the past..... who hasn't..... and I've been called on it. If I was a Garda watching that situation, I'd pull you both and throw the kitchen sink at you.

Can we just remember that the person who described 140kph on that road as "complete lunacy" was the OP who not only did 140kph on the road but on the wrong side of the road. From my perspective, I'd hope that we could all agree that when we've had these experiences (including me), we can look back and think, "maybe I should react differently the next time....".
