    Darwin award job.

What kind of gob goes to meet a stranger with 10k in cash?

Its absolutely moronic to just roll up to a carpark with that amount in cash. Especially having never met the supposed owner.

Having said that I did once go to buy a boat with 7k in cash on me but we met the owner at his house previously and there were 3 big lads and a shotgun in the car with me :)

    What were they thinking!

Did someone on boards not have an experiance similar to that recently.

wtf were you thinking? What were you gonna do with the shotgun if something happened? Risk jail for €7,000?? Was it a legally held shotgun? You had met the owner at his house already and were going back there to do te deal ffs! The stupidity of some people still suprises me....

How is that an over reaction? He brought a shotgun to buy a boat then bragged about it online! Stuff like that gives legal and law abiding gun owners a bad name

I went to buy Scooby too with 6k in my pocket.

There are times when you can do it and there are times when people are just to naive.

I had 6k with me, because I was going to meet a respectable member of Subaru car club. He was not just a fella from done deal. I had my buddy/mechanic too, who is bigger then me and I am not talking about belly! :D

"While a number of the adverts on the internet are genuine, in some of the scams we have seen recently sellers will tell the buyer a story to encourage them to buy the vehicle.

Sounds like your average s/h car salesman!

Ah good old motors forum. Like I never left... :)

Actually the main reason I went have look at the car, was that it had no spoiler, so job was already done!

LOL, time of the month is it?

I will answer your panicky, high horse and completely over the top questions one by one.

Firstly I will ask you to note the smiley in my original post.

    It is such :)

:) usually denotes an element of humour though it is over lost on those on exceptionally high horses as they cannot see it from up there.

    Ok so here goes:

In theory though not relevant: What would we have done with the shotgun if someone came at us with knives? i would imagine point it at them and legally defend ourselves. Its not a question of €7,000 its a question of the right to defend yourself.

Was it legally held? Yes it was officer.

The reason it was with us? We were picking up the boat at the lakeside and going shooting (duck) right away. This was in season and fully legal. And anyway I was joking in my OP (again hence the smiley), one of the lads knew the seller well from the local fishing club. The boat test went well though we didnt get any ducks.

So you can sleep soundly I will add:

The car was NCTed, taxed and insured. No alcohol had been consumed and we didnt litter.

Anyway let me point out the smiley again.

The stupidity of some people who get what they want from a post, miss the point completely and then go off on one still suprises me.. . .

LOL again. Ever here of the word "context"? Did i say I brought the shotgun? No i didnt, It wasnt mine. Did I say it was brought as protection from the seller? No I didnt, as you will note in the post above its presence was co-incidental.

In addition I didnt "Brag" and how the hell does bringing a legally held shotgun to purchase a boat and then go test it out give anyone a bad name...

Oh yeah I forgot..when people miss the point and jump to conclusions.

Anyway get back to me when the rage passes.

There is no rage, i took you up wrong so i appologise but to be fair all i had to go on was what you typed.. Did ya get any ducks then?

Back in the real world: I frequently buy and sell cars in Carparks or other locations. I usually bring someone with me, but its not unusual or in any way eventful usually.

Not terribly keen for strangers to meet me at my house, way out in the sticks.

Reasons i only deal with stealers or private sales at an independent location. (I Don't mind being at their house. :))

I'd be more inclined to call the people that robbed them ****in scumbags. Yes the buyers weren't exactly very clever about it, but I would still have some sympathy for there situation, infact a great deal of sympathy.

Can we lay off the uncivilness, I'm sure that everyone has done something stupid in their time. It doesn't help that others can read about it in the papers and pile on.
    Thank you.

Although I would only ever meet someone at their address, if you are buying a car for thousands, what is the safest way to do it?

My bro in NI used a bank draft once, I assume there are bank drafts in RoI too? And if so, what if you get one, decide you don't want the car, do you lose anything to give it back to the bank? If it is stolen from you can it be cashed in any way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

The safest way if meeting in a public place is to get a bank draft for the lowest sum you can get the car for and bring the rest in cash to haggle. I say idiots, because it sounds to me like they took no precautions, but i could be wrong. They must have said they would bring cash. If it were me, i would have said i would only be bringing enough to pay a deposit and hide the cash on me.

This was an innocent, trusting young couple. We were all young once! It was a horrific and frightening ordeal for them. All of us with young adult children try to let them live their own lives and make their own mistakes, but this brought me to tears. I hope they can put it behind them and move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,151 ✭✭✭kupus

Its not a case of them being stupid imo.

Its more a case of being naive, They might have though Ireland is a nice place to conduct a regular transaction like that. But to their cost they found out the wrong way.

It boggles my mind here on boards how naive people are in some situations, but if they havent had a bit of experience, well then they have nothing to fear.... So things like this will continue to happen now and in the future to people who are too trusting of other strangers.
Which is a bad thing, but unfortunately its a fact of life living in Ireland.

I think companies need to be a little more responsible too. I saw a blatant scam on carzone before and had to go lengths to get them to follow it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭discodavie

I regularly meet people at my local petrol station to view the car. Once we're ready to do the deal I take them back to my house and we complete there.

These scumbags that were supposay selling the car took advantage of this couple

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

One thing i do when going to buy something for cash or transferring to their account to post for stuff on done deal etc. is ask them to send a mail from their work email if they have one or to add me on facebook so i can see who they are etc.

Found both of my previous cars through forums from reputable posters so took that as assurance.

Can the Gardai not find out how payment was made to place the ad, the history of the mobile phone used and locations where it was used to gather CCTV of the thieves?

A Passat not a Bora, knowing cars would help. The car would hold a max of 55 litres of fuel which is less than €100, it will cost RTE more to broadcast this piece of TV than the fuel stolen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,245 ✭✭✭myshirt

I can tell you for a fact, they wouldn't take the money off me.

Anyway... it's plain and simple, if you can't handle yourself, you shouldn't have that much cash on you.

Nevertheless, this boils my blood. F#cking scumbags.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭SGKM

They never spoke to the person before meeting, that's the key warning sign here. Viewing a car when your only prior communication with the seller has been via text is just plain daft, not just because of the chance of being robbed at knife point, but you'd want to know more about the car than what's in the ad and I'd also like to get a feel for the previous owner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭hellyeah

I have sold a few cars in my time and i am genuine. But cannot believe how stupid some people can be. I would never stitch anybody up but i have had people trying to drive away with out filling out ownership documents etc, not knowing what to do, sold a car in the dark in a lidl car park.
But the best of all was 9pm on a winters night a lad shows up to buy a integra type r in a topaz garage. Now for me performance car, plus dark and garage i would run a mile. Hardly looked at the car (must have been impressed by my driving on the test drive 8500rpm all the way)
Now that guy was lucky as the car was straight and he got a good one , but i can see how people could be shafted.
