Barefoot lifting

    Hi guys,
    So was dead lifting today in socks as I always do and was interrupted by one of the Pt's requesting that I wear my runners, health and safety policy etc..
    I never had this problem in any other gyms and tried to explain why I like to deadlift in my socks but she was quick to explain that she was a PT and that dead lifting in asics is the best way to do it.
    And unfortunately I'm stuck with this gym for the summer.
    Just wondering if anyone else has had this and if there's anyway around it . Thanks

    Get flat shoes like merrell trail gloves or NB minimus.

    Hell even cons would do.

    It's a valid reason from her perspective - most insurance policies would talk about mitigating risk. Have shoes off and getting your toe smashed doesnt' d othat!

    I've always wondered about this policy most gyms to have with regards to wearing shoes. What in the name of god is about 3mm of cotton going to do if I drop a plate or a DB on my foot. It's pure nonsense.

    On a side note, tried the dead lifting in socks, found it actually easier although I could feel myself trying to grip with my toes.

    i love squatting barefoot....sadly its a no go in most if not all gyms...the one im in now though sometimes you can do it due to very low staffing levels...id be all on for signing a disclaimer if it was available!

    I squat/dl in my socks in Ben Dunne and nothing has ever been said to me. I always get the weights first before I take my runners off and then stick them back on before I put the weights back.

    I used to always deadlift and squat in socks in BD too and never had anything said to me.

    I can't see what protection standard runners or cons are going to be up against anything more than about 5kilos.

    Maybe they had complaints about smelly sweaty socks? From a protection point of view shoes wont do much to protect you anyway.

    Surely someone is going to have to sue their gym after dropping a a barbell on their toe while being barefoot, for the insurance company to want steel toe capped Nike Airmaxs.

    I would not be happy with people lifting barefoot in my gym if i was an owner.
    A lot of people are stupid and would forget that they can slip if they have sweaty feet or are just wearing socks.
    I like my clients to do some things barefoot but they are always warned about grip.

    i dont think its related to dropping weight on your foot as mauch as its about when you step away from your lift and on to something sharp on the gym floor, which will lead to crying and shouting at the gym people that they should have a policy in place to stop slightly pointy things sticking into peoples feet.

    The majority have 2 feet, but all the people with one foot, or no feet mean the average is dragged down a fraction.

    Just get a pair of flat soled shoes. I'm goin against the grain of the thread here and saying that they should make people wear shoes in the gym. I don't want your sweaty ass feet sweatin all over the wooden platform and then I go and crease myself cause of your sweaty foot. There's also a greater chance of you slipping during a lift. The gym has to cover their arses they're a business at the end of the day.

    And before someone says someone can sweat all over the place anyway shoes or no shoes, higher risk with someone in their socks gettin that place all moist. And the argument of 'i whipe down after' doesn't fly with me because a lot of people are lazy asshóles and won't do that, just look at the plates and the likes that are always left on bars by said lazy asshóles.

    i think it's just the fear of health and safety. Also some people have terrible hygiene and their feet will stink

    Yeah there's **** all protection from the impact of a plate* BUT the soles of nearly all runners will give better grip than sweaty socks. Still deadlift in my socks myself though but it's on unpainted, rough polish, concrete floor.







    *Friend broke his toe in my place once dropping a 5kg plate on it, while wearing runners.
