Recovery between sessions

    Prior to my leg injury, I did the same workout, five days a week, Monday to Friday, which entailed 30 minute cardio, 30 minutes weights, 10 minute core. However my brother, who is training to be a personal trainer, suggested that I vary the workout to concentrate on a different area each day to allow for proper recovery in between sessions, I.e. one day cardio, next weight, next core/weights or core/cardio etc. he says this would help avoid the repeat of my leg injury and allow my body to recover.

    Is this a good idea and if so, what would be the right balance? I don't want huge muscles but I do like how I have toned up quite nicely and I want to keep my weight down and abs toned. My diet is sorted so its the workout variables that need to be decided upon.

    Recovery is very important, i would sugest following the advice. Not as up on it as others on here, so i cant give any advice etc, but muscles need time to repair after a workout, therefore to get optimum results you should allow them this time.

    The kind of workout you are currently doing is ideal for an absolute beginner for 6-12 weeks, after that, the body adapts to it quite easily and you will make diminishing gains on that programme as the body becomes more and more efficient at getting through the workout.

    You should change it up and have different focuses on different days.

    You could look into a bodybuilding style split 3 or 4 day split or a powerlifting based programme over 3-4 days or any other combination.

    You are looking for progressive overload, ie, constantly doing a little bit more than the previous workout, an extra rep or a small bit more weight, forcing the body to work harder.

    Ask your brother to put something together for you and give it a lash for 6 weeks and see how you get on
